I have enjoyed a plethora of Imperial and regular stouts and usually when they are a hop forward stout I tend to age them till the hops fade a little - examples would be ( Night Stalker ) (Storm King/ Intrigue) ( Stone IRS) ( Tunguska) , I personally don't like the hoppier stouts and lean more toward ones that have lower IBU'S - The ones that are hoppy I prefer to age for a few months to a year .

My question is do you prefer a hoppy stout or one that has been aged or ones that are less hoppy ..

    Cheers !

I really do like a hoppy stout, but I love it when I can age a hoppy stout (Expedition, Darkness, etc) and they turn into a smooth sweet bottle of roasty chocolate happiness.

Less hoppy and more boozy. NO ANISE. I know that's not part of your poll but I can't stand it. I really wish Stone RIS wasn't loaded with it, because it would be a great RIS for $5 a bomber.

Expedition is another one I should have listed , I have tried it fresh and with age and the one with age was much better imo ..

    thanks for the reply

I like hoppy stouts a lot, just like them toned down a little more.

I can't agree with the anise , I love black licorice and wish more RIS's /Imperial Stouts would put it in . and molasses too , But I am in complete agreement with less hops ...more boozy is always a good thing too ..

Funny thing, I hate black licorice sticks but I dig it in Stouts.

boozy with a big hit of roasted malty goodness and molasses. The boozier the better. Not a big hoppy stout fan though.

Does anybody see a correlation between the hoppy stouts and barleywines and people seeing a need to age them?

Stone IRS, Expedition, Storm King, Bigfoot are the most popular beers to age, all are too hoppy for the style when fresh. Personally, I say screw aging these beers, I'll just buy another stout that isn't too hoppy and enjoy it fresh.

Nightstalker '10 is an absolute liquorice bomb right now, a bomb I'm more than happy to have blow up in my face and gullet. On other occasions, however, I prefer something of the coffee/chocolate persuasion.
I guess my answer to your poll would be "sometimes", but you haven't provided an option for that so I can't answer ("It doesn't bother me one way or the other" doesn't express the same sentiment).

Don't get me wrong I love the coffee and chocolate aspect of many stouts , the reason for not putting them in the poll is because some of the hoppier stouts are so hop forward you can't taste anything else .. Give me Breakfast Stout all day ..But I agree coffee and chocolate (unless it's to sweet) make a great stout..

    Cheers !

Good point - I have always wondered if it's intentional so people will age them ..

I'm just the opposite. I like black licorice but hate the flavor of it in my beer.

    Not an either/or.

I can enjoy a hoppy stout as much as a non-hoppy stout.
