Picked up two more bottles of Kloster Andechs' Doppelbock Dunkel. Checked in on the Fastenbier and it does indeed to have sold - only two or three bottles remained - however this doppelbock actually has the same date code as my last purchase a few weeks ago (3004). Ah well, more for me I guess.

Every Andechs bottle I come across in CT is dated early 2014, very disappointing.

Unfortunate status quo in the US market in general. Great, world-class brews getting no love right now.

Just taken delivery of a shipment from web-bier.de, i've used them before and can really recommend them for great service if you're in europe (they dont ship to the US i dont think), they dont have a massive range and it all seems to be from around the south of bayern and around munich (nothing franconian) but they have some good stuff and with the pound strong against the euro at the moment the price per bottle including delivery is working out around £1.50 which is a pretty good price to be able to buy good german beer for over here

I'll try and report back on my findings with this lot!

I thought these videos were well worth watching so I thought I'd post them here.

The description for the first video says that it is from BFS (Bayerisches Fernsehen, Bavarian TV) anno 1961.

Wow. I would have guessed much earlier. Danke. Is he really drinking Berliner Weiß mit Himbeer in that clay Krug?

no. he is saying that people up in the north are drinking it.

really fascinating stuff, i love how developments we hear a lot today were even there back then, like"dark beer which became out of fashion even in bavaria"....XD

The narrator makes a point out of noting that the more old-world procedures shown in the videos are "museum pieces" by then, and not used by the larger breweries.

Thanks for sharing, they were great. I only wish those Spaten Oktoberfest beers could have been seen in color!

Hand-pitching (and de-pitching) barrels, cutting ice for the fermentation cellars, hand-turning the malting grains; hand-picking the hops, using steam-powered brew houses, etc.

That is most likely correct. I was with them on that trip.

Thanks for the clarification/confirmation. When I saw you had posted, I was certain you'd be mentioning how many of the "museum pieces" Schell's is now using. Was thinking about you guys as I typed many of those things. Someday I'll make it up there to the frozen North to get some of your beers at the source. Keep it up!

Hahaha. Yeah, we have a habit of not throwing anything away. I think that comes from going thru the lean years when you didn't have the money to buy new things. It's amazing how many things you can reuse when you are forced to.

Came across this today, bottle looked suspect but worth a try. First timer so will need some guidance. Difficult to describe as it is very delicate and almost neutral. Slight whiff of sulfur on aroma, mostly grassy? Light sweetness in taste, dry on the finish. Very enjoyable so must be relatively fresh.

i find that kölsch distinguishing feature from a pilsner is a certain "perfumy" note and a little less hop bitterniss.
