Hello all, long time lurker here. Sorry for the long post, but I have to give all the details so there is no bias.

Here is my situation. I had my info on the Darklord Day IP Spreadsheet a few weeks ago. I mentioned that I lived near FFF, and that I'd be willing to pickup Zombie Dust, bombers, etc for anyone coming from out of town for anyone who setup a trade with me. Once the announcement was made that there would be no carryout sales at DLD other than DL, I'm sure that became an even more attractive option for out of towners. I will get what they need, and they won't have to wait in any lines on Friday or Sunday. Sounds like a good idea/deal, no?

Well, another BA reached out to me stating that they were coming from southern Cali, and they would like to take me up on that offer. He (I assume) said that he had some rare bottles, and could get Pliny, Almanac, etc, but was limited to what he could physically bring on the plane. He quickly listed a few bottles he had (veritas 015, sede vacante, russian river sours) and said that he was a newbie trader, and would also get back to me with a cellar list.

He requested 2 cases of Zombie Dust (within 2 weeks of the event, as they were gifts for others), and some various bombers. He also provided a cellar list, at mentioned that he had a Chocolate Rain as well. After perusing his list, I decided on Veritas 015, and Chocolate Rain. I also asked him to pickup 2 Almanac Golden Gase Gose for me. He was on the fence about including the Chocolate Rain, but eventually said yes, when I offered to add a 2014 Hunahpu.

So the trade as tentatively agreed upon was this: He would bring Veritas 015, Chocolate Rain, and 2 Almanac Gose. All told, I believe he spent a total of $84 on the three bottles. (Veritas 015 $41, Chocolate Rain $30, 2x Almanac Gose $13) I understand that the Veritas and Chocolate Rain are very highly rated and trade very well. In exchange, I would provide him 2 cases of Zombie Dust, 3 bombers of Floyds regulars, and a Hunahpu 2014, and no wait time in line, and meet him Sunday morning before his flight back. All told I thought I'd spend $110 on the Floyds, and another $20 on the Hunahpu, since I got it at Huna Day.

Well, I thought that since there would be no carryout at DLD, that the normally fast seller Zombiedust, would sell even faster than usual. I decided to pickup his two cases a week early (4/7) so I could avoid the glut of regulars picking it up, and not risk being shutout if I couldn't make it there on time. Also to avoid a potentially long line the week of DLD. I picked up various bombers for him, and ended up spending $116 instead of the $110 I had thought of.

I then asked if he could include another Almanac sour to make up the difference. The response I got was to forget the trade altogether, since I bought the Zombie Dust 18 days in advance instead of within his requested 14 day window. Again, these bottles were to be gifts for others, and he made it a point to mention that again. He was also not happy that I requested another beer, either, even though I ended up spending a few more dollars that originally planned.

My question, if you're still reading, is was it a dick move to ask for another beer? What can I do to salvage the trade? I'm left holding onto $116 worth of Floyd beer, that yes, I could drink, but I already have a bunch, and was looking forward to enjoying the beer I will be receiving in other trades.

I would have to say it was a dick move on his part. I wouldn't think you would have a problem setting up a similar trade for the zombie dust. If I had a chocolate rain I would trade it to ya. Good luck

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt since he said he was, in his words "as green as they come" when it comes to trading. I hope he will reconsider.

    1) Forget the trade 2) Don't set up such a large trade with new traders 3) Don't set up such a complicated trade 4) No, I don't think it was a dick move to ask for something extra but you must have already been a bit peeved about not trading $4$ 5) I am sure that you wont have problems setting up in person trades during DLD for your unneeded FFF stash 6) enjoy! enjoy! enjoy!

Was the $6 worth it to you to need another beer? I would say it was a dick move on both sides. It was a dick move on his end to cancel it but it isnt his fault that it cost you extra $ to complete your end of the trade.

sticky one. It is a trade at your own risk proposition, and it appears he felt too risky. I dont think it's a dick move, not a cool one as well. Hate to say it as it might be salt in your wound, but never trade for anything you dont have in your posession.

    A few thoughts:

    1. I would move this to the "Beer Trading Talk and Help" section for more feedback.
    2. Communication during trade is paramount. A quick text prior to buying the beer might've prevented this (I know it is too late but some advice for next time).
    3. Did you open a trade request through the trading system on BA? You can leave feedback if you did.
    4. Put those two cases up for trade on the trade boards. I am certain you will get some beers you are looking for.
    5. Don't ask for more beer after the trade is agreed to. If you send more, just count those as extras. A $6 difference in a trade that is more than $100 already seems like a pretty small extra anyway. In my mind, this probably squashed your trade.

No, it wasn't a dick move to ask for another beer. But if he specifically asked that the ZD be purchased 14 days or less before the event, then you shouldn't have bought it earlier than that.

Ok, how to move the thread?

Being as difficult as it probably will be to get Zombie Dust over DLD weekend, I doubt you will have any problem setting up another trade on the spot at DLD, or at the very least, sold at cost to someone.

    1. I don't know how. need help moving the thread
    2. We communicated fairly often. Every few days. I even purchased a case of ZD in the last week of march just in case, and I told him about it. It was for emergency use only. I always planned to buy more when it came out, but wanted a fallback in case it got crazy at FFF. I eventually picked up 2 days ago, and I updated him.
    3. No did not do the trade through trading system, since he is new.
    4. I will do that in a few days if we haven't come to an agreement.
    5. That's advice I will listen to. The $6 difference was that some of the beers were more expensive that expected, or were different that their regular $10 DIPA's.

A Mod can move it. You seem to be getting some good advice already though. I was suggesting moving it before I saw people were replying.

My trading is very limited these days, but I find recently that new traders are definitely the most obnoxious around. BM me his name and where he is from so I will know who it is and who to avoid, if you don't mind.

New traders definitely seem to be more entitled than others IMO. They seem to think their beer is more rare, they overdemand, and are overall less generous. At least that has been my experience.

I'm not trying to shame anyone. He didn't setup the trade on here, so I doubt you'd have to worry anyways.

Lessons learned. Personally, I think you made a big deal out of $6, especially if you already had the deal in place. A big reason why you DON'T make trades before the beer is in hand. If its with a regular, its understandable. But as cducap pointed out, communication is key. I assume he felt uncomfortable arguing over $6 and didn't think it was worth it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm gonna wait a few days, and I've already gotten a few messages from others willing to pickup any leftovers, so thanks for that too. I'm considering this closed, as I've learned what I needed to.

So if he was limited to what he could bring on the plane to trade to you, how the hell was he getting 2+ cases of beer back to Cali?
