Watching Toppling Goliath's Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout creep to the #2 position got me thinking that heady may have a serious threat to it's multiple year run at the #1 beer on this site, so I threw together a quick graph using this site's normalizing equation. KBBS needs ~120 more ratings to overtake heady assuming KBBS ratings don't drop, and ~150 more to overtake it at n=infinite ratings for heady (assuming KBBS ratings don't drop).

Could one more batch of KBBS be enough to overtake the reigning champ?

This took me 10 minutes and I was curious, so you can hold the "you have too much time on your hands" replies. :stuck_out_tongue:

The excitement is palpable. How long has Heady been #1?

One more batch of KBBS is what,
300 bottles? It might be another year before 150 of those people even drink theirs!

Quick! Everybody has to ramp up their Heady ratings to keep it at #1!

This is exactly why there needs to be a playoff for the national championship. You just can't leave it to the pollsters.

Oh wait, wrong site. Never mind.

Look, ratings are a joke since people can just throw numbers down and have no comments. Just look at the Beers of Fame list and be happy. You simply can't compare different styles to each other.

It would be kind of sad to have such an impossible beer to attain as #1. But interesting analysis OP.

Just got back from a mini vacation in Vermont after having lived there for awhile. I understand that all things are a matter of taste but Heady wasn't the best IIPA When I lived there a few years ago and it is simply not as great as other beers made in that state. Hill Farmstead makes a wide variety of beers in different styles that are just simply better than Heady. Lawsons has made a steadily available IPA that is much better in Sip of Sunshine (not even mentioning double sunshine which is worlds ahrad of everything). Headys hype has carried it and goes to show the power of persuasion. Its a great IPA worthy of praise but it just is not the best beer in the world or even the state of Vermont. Everybody that I hung with in Vermont agreed that the hype was fading a bit for them and this goes to show that it will for everyone else as well. Sip of Sunshine won't take over as number one but the fact that its being canned and hyped as much as it is will contribute to heady falling from # 1 within the next year.

That's you - I've had them both and for me SOS didn't hold a candle to HT, but I think that's mostly personal preferences. Found it too sweet, and not juicy in the same delicious way that Heady is. And it's not like SOS is itself unhyped or easy to get out of Vermont.

I think they usually release it on draft and would probably tap it at some festivals with small pours, that's where most of the ratings come from

It is taste for sure, I don't knock people for liking it because I know it is good. Answering the question of whether or not Heady will remain as number 1, I don't think it will after feeling the vibe in Vermont and most people liking SOS more at this point (whether or not it is better is a matter of opinion). Like I said I don't think SOS will ever be number one but I could feel the hype fading for the locals at this point which I think will translate to everyone else soon enough.

You guys just need to accept that Heady Topper did something that no other beer could. They made an intensely hopped beer while making it much more drinkable than the rest. When you taste Heady, you can't relate it to any other beer. It's like the gold...nah, platinum standard for how its done in Vermont. Are Platinum a species of hops? Because The Alchemist went platinum seven times...

Don't worry, half of those 12 ounce bottles are shared between 30 people, all of whom will decide it's the best thing they've ever drank from the microsip they get.

Interesting. I was super underwhelmed by SoS. It isn't going to stop me from buying more of it when I go this weekend (if the Fresh Tix website ever comes back up), but it wasn't something I would go insanely out of my way for, either.

I finally had heady not too long ago and was severely underwhelmed. my least favorite out of heady SoS and second fiddle just for vermont. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that its been around for so long. when it came out it was something impressive but since then so many other great DIPA's have come out and IMHO far surpassed heady. Personally Trillium in Boston takes the IPA cake for me. It really is just the fan boys keeping heady alive IMO.

There's lots of beers with 100 ratings that are more readily available. I've never had HT and probably most on this site neither.

Who really cares what's number 1...it's all just beer! Heady is good, but not #1 good IMO.

If you can't be with the beer you love, love the beer you're with!
