Can anyone direct me to a superior Maibock? I've had 4 or 5 so far and none of them have been real fabulous. I know I could just write off the style, but I'd truly like to have a great example before I do. The closest I've come to actually liking one is Schell's Maifest.

Edit : looking back on my reviews I guess Rogue's Dead Guy Ale was the best Mai I've had. Still not very memorable (since I forgot about it in the first place)

Dead Guy is where it's at for me, maybe try revisiting that, and try and make sure it's fresh. It's the only Rogue beer I've ever purchased more than once.

My only suggestion is that you go to this list:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/lists/style/33/

And start working your way down the list until you find something to try that's actually distributed there.

My problem is the same as @JackHorzempa 's. My favorites are not available there. But the one I would add to his list if you ever find yourself visiting NJ or SE PA is to look for the Ramstein Maibock.

Among craft beer drinkers lagers in general do not seem to an extremely popular style and within the category of lagers Maibock is not as popular as styles like Pilsners, …

Maybe the Maibock style is not in your ‘sweet spot’ so a lack of Maibocks is not too big of a deal for you?

    Cheers!

It's not, but being the nerd I am I'd rather try one I like before just broadly painting an opinion of "yeah mang...I just don't like Maibocks" and the other dude's like "wtf!".

Of course, I am more partial to Imperial Stouts and Hefeweizens.

The one from Hofbrau is a bit atypical in that it's caramel colored and it has a lot of that flavor coming over, too. It tastes a bit like a smaller doppelbock. It's my fave, although I like the more traditional pale ones, too.

Finding a Maibock you like and meets the requirement of being distributed to South Dakota may be an insurmountable problem?

    Cheers!

I don't believe so. A lot of the Munich area ones don't seem to make it over here.

The Spaten one used to show up here (and, I believe, throughout the US) fairly regularly. However, like many other products from that brewery recently, availability has been very spotty of late. Shame...

That's my favorite of the traditional ones. Even beat Augustiner head-to-head.

Unfortunately, they stopped importing that one a few years ago -- even at that time it was only on tap.

To the O.P. and Basics -- Dead Guy really tastes nothing like a Maibock, so it would be difficult to compare that with some of the better ones available.

Are there Trader Joes in N. Dakota? They have a couple Mai/Hellerbocks in their Josephsbrau line that are brewed for them by Gordon Biersch -- a very fine brewer of German styles in California.

My favorite is still the Klosterbrau Maibock from Bamberg.

Summit Maibock is an excellent example of the style, IMHO.
