I was chatting with a couple folks this weekend about how confusing it gets to try to get certain beers. A brewery might have deals with different distributors in different areas, but sometimes the areas overlap, and the buyers get stuck having to deal with who carries what. With the growth of craft, it's important to pick a distributor who will rep your brewery well. But when the distributor carries a lot of brands, there's only so much effort the can expend. Here's the 4 main distributors for my town, and there's some overlapping, even in this relatively small area:

this is one part (okay, one of the many parts) of the craft beer industry that i know very little of but find interesting...thanks for sharing.

side note: why does everyone keep changing their avatars...it confuses me :slight_frown:

I would like to cause bodily discomfort to the distributor for Sierra Nevada that services the Central Coast of Oregon. Old 4 way IPA 12 packs all over the place, no Hop Hunter (never got any) and Summerfest on the shelves already. nothing like a nice pilsener on a cold rainy day.

    LOL.

Are these older IPA's mostly in bottle shops or grocery stores? In the Seattle area almost every grocery store has older IPAs, I've found the same in bigger liquor/beer stores (Total Wine / BevMo) so I avoid buying IPAs there. Smaller bottle shops that more directly cater to beer enthusiasts and craft are typically better about keeping fresh stuff on shelves.

"It's important to pick a distributor who will rep your brewery well. But when the distributor carries a lot of brands, there's only so much effort they can expend" - just like when I called Shangy's "The Beer Authority" and asked them about a brewery they represent (Draai Laag)... ... ... "No, we don't carry that". Perhaps actually knowing what breweries you carry is too much effort!

Here in Newport we have ONE very small brewpub/bottle shop and most of the bottles there are high end bombers and imports. otherwise we are at the mercy of Fred Myers and Safeway. It sucks.

I did miss it, and was especially caught offguard by the Card's avatar you were sporting, since you generally come off as enough of an M's fan that you were discomfited by my recent mention of Jose Lopez.

And before anyone calls me out for inconsistency, I changed mine because college basketball is now over, and Tyler Harvey is making his bid for the NBA.

Wait, I thought you were one of us that were doing the mid-thread avatar changes? And, any right thinking American is going to be put off at the mention of Joze Lopez's name.

What happened was, anytime someone would reply to us, we would change our avatar to theirs. The whole thread looked like we were talking to ourselves for a few hours. It was oddly satisfying and fun. I blame @draheim .

I might have blundered into it without knowing the rules. I've been guilty of that sort of thing before.
