Am a huge fan of Ballast Point's Victory At Sea, but have found that the upfront massive amounts of coffee and vanilla have ruined my palate for other coffee/vanilla beers. Am taking some time off to re-calibrate from VAS, what do you guys think? What have been you experiences?

If you get a chance, try Modern Times Special Release of Blackhouse w/coconut and cocoa nibs. You might find this as a good replacement for VAS for a bit.

And to answer your question, Pliny has set the standard for me for an awesome DIPA. Though I know there are others out there I have yet to try, the Elder is my go to DIPA.

I haven't really enjoyed a coffee stout since I had Pisgah's Valdez....even Bolivia Newton John left something to be desired (aside from the amazing aroma)

    Founders Imperial Stout.

That brew ruined the rest of Founders Stouts for me. The rest seem Mediocre in comparison.

Trillium's hoppy offerings have changed my perception of any hoppy beer I get. They have ruined IPA's and APA's for me. Not going to complain though.

Once had an altbier a friend described as smelling like a wet dog. Now I get it from nearly all of them.

Really? I know taste is definitely subjective, but I received 2 fresh bottles (bottled 2 weeks ago) of Pliny from a friend in California over the weekend. I was so excited to finally get a chance to try it and was EXTREMELY underwhelmed by the experience. I didn't even keep the second bottle. I traded it to my cousin for a mix pack of Sixpoint beer. Finished the Pliney and followed it up with an Orpheus Transmigration of Souls and the latter blew Pliny out of the water!!!!

Sure. Try drinking a Palate Wrecker (or two) and then attempt to taste the subtlety in a Czech pilsner.

If you drink a high ABV IPA before anything else, tastebuds are shot.

I know I'm in the minority here, but what realy turns me off about Victory at Sea is that that coffee and vanilla combo specifically in that beer taste so artificial to me. Off-putting and border-line cloying. That beer has done the exact opposite for me. It's made me appreciate the other ones more if anything, but that's the beauty of subjectivity.

To answer your question, for me the one that ruined others is Pliny the Elder. Mostly by how clean it is in comparison to others of the same style.

    Cheers!

NEBCO's Sea Hag/Gbot and then Hill Farmstead Susan...after those three, I had to reevaluate my beer life.

PtE definitely did it for me. While I still enjoy several other excellent DIPAs, whenever I drink one, there's a small part of me that secretly wishes it was a Pliny.

I'm a noob by most standards and have always considered myself a stout fan. So, in the last two months I've had BCBS, Black Note, KBS and CBS all for the first time. Basically every other non-imperial, non-barrel aged stout has been ruined for me. Just like the OP said, I'll be taking some time off from some of the bombs to let my palate reset.

Wow. I guess I'm hyping up Pliny too much then. Funny thing is, my best friend introduced to the Elder about 2 years ago. This was way before my taste buds were remotely developed. To this day, still not developed, but PtE just set the standard for me. I haven't had a chance to try Heady. But I think the only other DIPA that came close to PtE for me was Fat Head's Hop JuJu. That beer is delicious.

Really? I just don't find that beer all that unique in terms of Imperial Stouts. It's good, but it doesn't really have anything that sets it apart, like the coffee/oatmeal/chocolate in Breakfast Stout. If anything, FBS makes FIS seem kind of middling.
