Business trip to Philly this week, and Monk's is at the top of my list of places I need to visit while I'm there. Just a few quick questions:

    1) Do they sell bottles to go, and if so, are they at a discount if you get them to go? Some craft beer bars in VA will sell them to you for 30-40% off if you get them to go.

    2) What's the pricing like for bottles, in general...close to beer store prices, or big markup? It doesn't list them on the menu. I have my eye on the RR Consecration.

    3) What is the TV setup like? I am hoping to catch some of the Capitals-Islanders game tomorrow night, which is on the USA network. Should I just hit up a sports bar for that, and push the Monk's visit to Thursday night?

    Thanks in advance!!

    1. Yes, but depends the bottle. I don't believe they sell a lot of bottles to-go. If they do, it's the same price as in house, no discounts in my experience.

    2. Generally higher, but depends on the bottle. Some bottles are really reasonable, others are just outrageous. It's really hard to say since you don't really know what is actually available vs. what's listed in the beer book/menu.

    3. No TV at Monk's.

Was there on Saturday for the Phillies/Nats game. Great place. Smaller than I had imagined.

Had RR Elder (on tap) and Supplication and Damnation (bottles) and the mussels!

    Choose wisely my son!

Awesome, thanks again. Hopefully they'll sell me a Consecration to go. We get them on the grey market in DC sometimes, but at an outrageous markup ($40 per bottle at the places I know of).

In general, there isn't much price difference between bars and bottle shops here, because PA charges the same tax to both. If you're looking for bottles of Consecration, try a bottle shop. Monk's isn't likely to have it. Old Philly Ale House is pretty dependable for Russian River, just call ahead there.

    Blind Pig too??

Can't wait to get me a Pliny. Haven't had it on draft since moving from CA four years ago.

I found consecration at the Foodery when I was in Philly last year. It's not too far from Monks.

Thanks, I'll try to check it out. Consecration is listed on Monk's online bottle menu; think it's outdated?

I was there on Saturday and they had it still. I think it was $25 or $30 for a bottle.

No TVs at monks. They do sell bottles to go, but not most of the belgium stuff. You can get consecration at bottle shops, for less than at monks. Consecration is sitting on shelves in other shops (for 20). Monks for the most part is overpriced on a lot of bottles. Monde market had it last time I went (they only put one out at a time, so if it isn't next to the damnation, ask just in case), as well as locust deli, on 21st and locust I think. Also food and friends might have had it. Also check beer menus.com if you can't find it on the shelves, other bars sell it to drink in house for less than monks, i think varga bar or perch pub might have it.

Thanks for all the tips! My office, hotel and Monk's are all about 1/2 mile apart, so I'm going to try to hit something in that vicinity. Locust Deli and Monde Market both look like they're walking distance.

They are a little bit west of rittenouse square, and are definitely walking distance from what it sounds like. Food and friends is only a couple blocks south of them, but if you go to locust and monde, food and friends won't have anything different.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies.

Any good sports bars near 17th and Market...somewhere that would be airing a non-Flyers playoff hockey game? Work stuff ends around 8:30 tomorrow night, so I'm hoping to catch the last two periods of the game somewhere nearby.

Smith's is really close to there, and cavanaughs isn't much further. I don't know if they will naturally be playing any non philly teams, including the flyers, but they both have several TVs. Cavanaughs may be more willing to show other stuff, if they aren't already.

Be polite and ask for the game you'd like and most places will put it on IF they've got multiple television sets.

I've seen Consecration recently at Food and Friends (20th and Spruce) as well. The RR bottles (Consecration/Supplication/Temptation) are typically in the low 20s price range there. Check out the far back wall, that's where it would be if they have it.

Fox and Hound definitely has the most TVs, and Misconduct has a bunch of TVs too. My favorite spot is Strangeloves, especially if the upstairs bar is open. The food is great, and the staff is great about accommodating TV requests.

If they're still selling bottles of the Firestone PNC I would suggest picking one up to go. Sure it's $30 but it's well worth it.

Don't know what part of VA you're departing from for this trip but IF you're driving to Philly, you might want to consider routing your trip through Media, PA and stop at Pinocchio's Restaurant and take a look at their Beer Garden out back. Just a thought.
