This happened to me twice recently and bothers me enough to post this in hope that we can try to collectively help each other by avoid participating in auctions behind the scene.

Last month someone posted a glassware trade. He was looking for 1:1. I PM'ed and told him I'll go 2:1 as I thought that would be more fair for him (2 different colors of the same glass). Right after that someone responded to his ISO and said exactly the same thing. He responded to my PM and said someone said his glass worth a lot more and that there's someone else in front of me and that he'd probably go with that trader. He then asked if I can add a specific beer (to match the glasses) and that he's "extra" me some beers. Reluctant, but I said "yes" and thought that was a done deal. He then messaged me back that he's going to go with the first trader because he's willing to do the same offer as mine. I don't have any problem with him going with the first trader, but I really felt I got used as a leverage to get more out of the first trader. I didn't bother to respond and owned the fact that I fell for the bidding trap.

Just yesterday, someone posted an ISO for beer A (limited) and offered up a hot beer B (pre). The post seems straight up 1:1 considering asking 2:1 A:B would be absurd. I messaged and asked if the trade is still open. He said yes and that he's getting 1:1 offers and asked if I'm "willing to do more". I said no and told him it's bad form to create a behind the scene auction. Had I offered more, in all likelihood he would go back to the other traders and ask for better offers.

In any case, I know it's just beer/glass/whatever and that you are free to do whatever you want with them, but please help fellow traders out by not falling for or putting in bids when you are discussing trades. We frown at "best offers" auction posts publicly, we shouldn't be participating it them in private conversations.

This is going to keep happening, its the nature of what "beer valuing" and "trade winning" has become.

No doubt that it will keep happening and I'm not really ranting about the fact it's happening. As many trades as I've done though, I thought I wouldn't get caught up in it, but I was wrong. Just wanted to caution others not to fall for those auction-y discussions, intentional or not.

    I can't agree more!

This has been happening way too much, I don't believe that many of them are sincere to start with. If you propose any trade, honor it.

Would it be bad form to go back to the original thread and notify others by responding "AUCTION!" ?

He's clarifying that he meant if I want to expand. I re-read a few times, hard to read it that way, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I wouldn't want to create drama through thread-shitting anyway.

No, it wouldn't and the post will more than likely be taken down.

If you've got evidence of an auction, report the original ISO and let the mods know you've got the written evidence.

Then, we can take appropriate action.

Fairly certain I know which post you are speaking of, and that sounds like ass coverage. You are more forgiving than I would be.

This is the main reason why I stick with repeat traders. There's too much going on behind the scenes now

yeah, a lot of pseudo auctioning goes on... if someone tries to bait me into one, I just pass and add them to my personal DNT list...

I'm starting to agree with you, I know a majority of trades go down without a hitch, but ya still gotta worry a bit

    I am.

Would-be traders who try this with the mods tend to fare poorly in the bigger scheme of things.

I had a similar situation in an in person trade. Trade set up for my Alchemist truck sale beers. Then in the time in between the sale he gets a better offer by mail. He asked if I would double the beer as he had a better offer. I told him to go with the better offer as it was double what his was worth. He came back begging as the other offer fell through (yeah right). No way would I wait at my vacation for him to maybe show up. He was later banned as a bad trader.
