okay this will be my first craft beer fest and I'm jumping in feet first on this one. What can I expect at dark lord day and what do I need to bring. I'm a babe in the woods, help me out. I have three friends going and we are all new to it.

An attitude to have a great time no matter what the day brings.

You can probably expect to not get a lot of responses here since you're posting in the wrong forum. Try the Great Lakes section, pretty sure they may have a thread or two on the subject over there.

Survival guide is a must read.

Know what you want to buy and plan your cash accordingly. Plan for food to be expensive and lines to be long. I always bring sandwiches, salty snacks (You will be judged if caught wearing a pretzel necklace), good protein sources (Jerky, clif bars, etc). I'd recommend drinking equal amounts beer and water, and don't go nuts; Taste the things you really want to taste. If you've had BCBS a billion times, don't dome a bottle. Its fun getting wasted, but you really don't want to be an incoherent mess with 10k other people.

Dark Lord Day is one of my favorite days of the year, even if its a giant shitshow. Expect long waits for anything. Don't be disappointed when you don't win a variant. Don't be disappointed if you don't get a teku glass/coffee bomber/hot sauce bottle. If you really want these things try to get them post-event. Last year Dark Matter sold different mini-snifters and coffee mugs on their website after DLD.

I recommend carrying your allotment back to the car immediately after purchase, then go back to the event. Sure, 4 bombers won't seem that heavy at first, but you'll get really tired of lugging it around.

Most of all, be friendly and make friends with the people waiting with you in line. I've never met an asshole at DLD. Everyone is willing to share if you're polite, and sharing in kind. Have fun.

You ever know that one hippie friend of a friend who has the biggest, most obnoxious hemp necklace, that looks like shit, but let's everyone at the jam band festival know that his is the biggest, filthiest, and gnarliest necklace around?

This is what pretzel necklaces are at beer fests. Especially the ones with cheese, pepperoni sticks, bags of nuts, etc.

    DON'T BE THAT GUY...

I've been once. The things that I didn't realize going in are:

    1. You can buy beer to go. This includes previous years DL.
    2. The beer to buy at the fest constantly changes and is awesome.
    3. Buying Dark Lord is the least important thing of the whole festival (minus shitty metal bands, unless you are into that sort of thing.)

From one woman to another and this being my 3rd DLD I will mention to be wary of the porta johns. Always use the buddy system for backup in case of a drunken jacker in there with the door unlocked and also to avoid the random tipping attempt.

beware of the port o potty aka chili closets.dress warm and for battle, but stay out of the mosh pit, dont get wasted..dont start crap with wasted people, dont get pissed if someone bumps into you and spills your beer.. if you have good beer, share it. bring a pile of cash. buy food there, it is really good. keep an eye on the taaaaps, the best beer is shared in the tent but, the tap list is awesome!

Call me Captain Obvious - but last year there were a bunch of folks who didn't bring a glass. If you want to enjoy the bottles that people will be freely sharing, bring along a small, preferably non-glass, glass. Especially if you want to share in the pre-opening queue.

You can expect a lot of sausage and facial hair. It can be a blast.. just don't cop attitude because of crowd behavior or drunken stupidity.
