Once opened? I'd say depending on style of beer, carbonation level, temperature and turbulence of your pouring.. Maybe 2 days at best. You aren't keeping it for a week, thats for sure.
For me, not overnight. I try and assume that once it is opened, it has to be finished. Growler are made to be shared!
This is generally how I feel. I have no problem cracking a growler in the afternoon, drinking a couple pours, and then finishing it later in the evening. But I don't usually let an opened growler sit overnight. I know some people will drink a growler over a couple days, but the best part about growlers IMO is getting super fresh beer, and I want it to taste super fresh.
I agree with you overall, but freshness is almost never a factor when I'm buying a growler. Rather, that's usually the only way that I'm able to drink that beer at home. The longest I've had a growler stay good after opening it is about 4 days.
I've had growlers sit around for a few days before opening but once I open it, I drink it... All of it... They're great for when you tell the wife your only having one beer.
I've had sealed growlers sit for months with no adverse effects (not IPAs, those don't last as long no matter what the fill is) but I will generally try to finish one the next day if I can't finish it the day I open. Very rarely it will last a third day, and that is dependent on style (higher ABV beers will last longer than lower ones.)
Depends on style. Something hoppy will last 24 hours, max, but even around the 24 hour mark, it will likely be noticeably worse than it was when you first cracked it. Still, if the beer was good to begin with, it will almost certainly still be good and well worth drinking. I've had saisons sit around in a 64 oz. growler for a couple days, where the 3rd day's poor seemed no worse for the wear. Same thing with sour beers. I wouldn't want to push it to a 4th day, but growlers do seem to keep better than resealed bottles. Probably because they are opened and poured cold; when I reseal a high gravity bottle that was poured closer to room temp, it won't last more than a day before it goes downhill.
I just purchased a Miir growler and filled it with Flying Dog Dogtober, which was great, however i was surprised that i filled it at a local brewery and brought it to a dinner party. Poured 3 glasses and brought the remaining home to finish that night (travel time was about 35 mins). When i got home i went to pour another glass and it was still ice cold but almost no carbonation. Does this seem normal?
(Possibly, depending on the type of growler, screwtop v. fliptop), but yes, it does seem normal. Between the multiple pours and the time sitting in the fridge/at the table before you traveled home, it seems quite possible that all carbonation was lost. Especially if the growler rocked during travel. Overall, regardless of particular circumstances, not a surprise.
Thanks Hophead717. The Miir Growler has a fliptop style closure and what you described as far as multiple pours, sitting time and travel time is very accurate. I truly enjoy the construction and the capabilities of keeping the beer cold that the Miir Growler offers. I wouldn't mind one that would offer a CO2 Kit at some point but for now it works great! Thanks for the feedback.
Finish it just like you would any bottle. They're meant to share have some friends over and enjoy it.
