    Hey Guys,

Me and a BA buddy and our respective families will be vacationing in Portland for a week between Christmas and New Year. We'd love to make it over to De Garde to finally sample their fantastic wares at the source.

So, I've got a few questions-

As they're only open Thur-Sun, we will probably be there either on New Year's Eve (Thursday) or New Year's Day (Friday). Firstly, will they be open at all? If so, do they traditionally throw any kind of party on such nights? If so, are they members-only type affairs?

We'll have the kids with us. They say on the website that kids aren't allowed in the tasting room- does this still apply at the new tasting room as their website doesn't seem to have been updated for quite a while?

Where would be the best place to stay nearby? There doesn't appear to be anywhere within walking distance- is this the case? Otherwise, from the threads I've seen, people seem to stay at the Shilo or Mar-Clair. Any other family-friendly options we should consider? There's also the possibility of staying on the coast- what are the beaches/accommodation like around Netarts Bay? I appreciate it'll be December but that wouldn't stop our kids from hitting the beach!

Also, are there any public transport options from Tillamook to the brewery or, if not, how easy is it to get a taxi there and back?

It's obviously still a long way off but I'd also be up for sorting out an IP trade or two if anyone's likely to be around then...

    Many thanks in advance,

    Cheers!

Still no kids allowed inside per Oregon state law.

Thanks. I'm interested as to what exactly the law is, as we visited Portland last year and took the kids to HotD & Cascade with no issues. Is that because they serve food?

Seaside and Pacific City are both good options on the coast for beer and family stuff. Both have breweries too.

Not a lot of taxi options in Tillamook. The only one I know of is Kenny G Taxi (seriously, that's what it's called), and his service is decent. We've used that for trips between the Mar Clair and De Garde on several occasions.

As a general rule, yes. OLCC regulations require food to be "available" during normal lunch/dinner hours. Some places have their own kitchens, and others have found a way around that by having on site food carts or by being located next to restaurants and welcoming patrons to bring in outside food. Unfortunately, since DG is in an industrial park with nothing (that I'm aware of) to eat nearby they fall squarely in the "no minors" category.

Up to a few years ago, you had to have several "food items" available to sell any alcohol in WA. Nightclubs (and some bars who served sandwiches/pizzas, which didn't count as meals) just kept 5 different frozen TV dinners in a freezer. And that was enough. Would that loophole work in OR?

You now have to have a certain number of hot and a certain number of cold items reasonably available to serve booze. Not sure the exact requirements for allowing kids.

That, and de Garde's space is so small that I can't imagine wrangling kids inside there.

When I was there a couple weeks ago on a little Oregon road trip with my parents and daughter (while my wife was stuck in Boston for work), my Dad played with my daughter in the little dog park next to the brewery while my mom and I had some beers. When I was done, I tagged my Dad out so he could go in and finish them with my mom.

We cleared this with the people at the brewery, mind you. I felt kinda douchy doing it, but they were fine with it.

I'm not sure, but the OLCC has the following to say about any place with a brewery, brewery public house, or "limited on premise" license:

AFAIK, the "hot and cold" requirement is only for places that serve hard liquor and have a full on premise license.

All this talk of kids makes me think someone should start a daycare/play area in one of the other spaces near de Garde. You could probably make a decent wage just being open roughly the same times as the tasting room...

I think something that is also important to remember is that some places (at least here in WA) don't want to be kid friendly, and there is nothing wrong with that.

De Garde was closed on New Year's Day last year, FYI. I'd imagine lodging should be fairly cheap and easy to come by, even on a holiday week. And yeah, still no kids allowed inside.

You can stay about a half hour south in Pacific City at a place called the Inn at Cape Kiwanda...the family-friendly Pelican Pub is right across the street. There are a ton of places to stay on the coast. Cannon Beach and Manzanita to the north are a bit more upscale and touristy, there's also Seaside, Netarts, Rockaway, there are so many little inns and bungalows to be found.

We stayed at a little dive hotel on the main strip in Pacfic City just around the corner from Twist Wine. It was cheap and worked for one night.

Oh yeah, I'm unsure of the options down that way. Never ventured much further past Twist.

I'd assume they'd be open normal Thursday hours. But who knows, things change. I found their holiday hours by scrolling back on their Facebook posts from late December.
