The full story is here and it's a good read: http://westerndigs.org/ring-tab-beer-cans-are-now-officially-historic-artifacts/

My brief summary is ring-top cans have reached a "magic" age of 50 years to be considered historical artifacts. Because cans are commonly found or dug up from historic sites, the ring-tab can be an indicator that the property might be of historical significance. An archeologist has also created an age dating sytem based on ring-top can styles that could be used to determine the age of a historic site. This can be important because some properties have little remaining that could be dated to a specific time frame.

If the archeologist had talked to @jesskidden he probably could have saved himself some time! :grinning:

I go to some places where I find the conical shaped cans with what looks like a little screw cap on top. Blue Ribbon and I think Bud and Schlitz. I well remember all of the above type cans and suspect that I might be an artifact! I also find all kinds of medicine bottles, milk bottles, and old pieces of Chevies, Fords, and Dodges. Nearby are lots of Indian artifacts along an old waterway.

Here is just a small sample of the spear points that I've found along Lake Townsend, down hill from where I often find later artifacts such as old cans and bottles. It's a very peaceful and beautiful area along the Greensboro reservoir system, down a steep hill from a dear friend's house. It's probably like it was 1000s of years ago. Oh, my friend, now deceased, was from Wilmington, Delaware and had a place at Dewey's Beach. He was bringing DFH 60 Minute back in the 90s.

My old man has talked about how he used to step on those tabs when he'd go to the beach.

I grew up in the Tristate area and when we were kids mom brought us to Bear Mountain to swim at the lakes. I remember finding Knickerbocker whole cans with ring tops and thinking that is just the greatest thing. Always been fascinated with the history since then.

That is really cool. Where I live now George Washington slept across the street at a Tavern that is now a residence. Gotta get a metal detector. A friend says there should be artifacts pertaining to this.

I think I'm approaching the artifact stage... a few years to go. I remember these well, when I first started guzzling Buds and Stroh's waaaaaaay before age 21...... I remember an episode of Emergency (anyone else remember this one? Gage and DeSoto - more artifacts - way before ER or Grey's Anatomy) where a guy was choking on one cuz it was common practice to put them in the can. Good times.... good times... :sunglasses:

I often work at brownfields sites (old, abandoned, usually contaminated, industrial properties), so I've seen a few of these ring-tab cans in building corners or buried [with a lot of other stuff]. I always thought the old industrial equipment, structures, artifacts [or "junk" to some people], historic operations/methods at those sites were really interesting.

I am fascinated with that industrial warehouse machinery. Worked in several warehouses when I was younger. They were former textile or wire manufacturing plants. Huge machines weighing thousands of pounds. And there was always evidence of beer. Cans,posters,calenders.,stickers. Plenty of Gansett around here. Once put an chain around my 1976 Malibu and with the hoist raised that baby up 30 or more feet and well.....there were plenty of beers. Not quite the crĂ ft era yet.......

You could also fold the tabs over and string them together. My friends and I used to decorate a buddy's Christmas tree with long strands. Then again, we used to get toasted and pop the glass bulbs on the tree with a BB gun, from the comfort of the couch. His wife was less than amused...

I recall going fishing with my Dad in the early 1960s. The canned beverages had no pull tab and the opener was fondly referred to as a "church key."

Sly Fox still has the 360 pull tab on their Helles Lager, I believe. Pull one way to crack it open and pull the other way and the whole top comes off. Instant aluminum chalice!
