Had my first last night. Split a bottlle of Smuttynose Big Beer Series with my wife. Surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I wonder how it would taste with a year or two on it. This style reminded me of a Barleywine, but more refreshing. As it warmed, you could pick up more flavors like vanilla, and more alcohol. Surprisingly, it reminded me of a more subdued version of Devil Dancer from Founders. I'm thinking this would be a good style for the winter months. Does anyone drink these on a regular basis? Or just occasionally? I want to seek out White Chocolate and compare to Smuttynose. Overall it was very good!

Yes! One of my favorite styles, though they seem somewhat hard to find. Wish I could drink them more often. Definitely agree with your tasting notes, and they do age well and a great for the long winter.

I would like to get to know this style more and yes it seems harder to find. The only example I tried was Alesmith Decadence, and it was quite good.

New Holland Pilgrims Dole is really good.

Boulevard Harvest Dance. Certainly my favorite Wheatwine.

I aged one for 7 years and it was mind blowing.

Aside from yeast character, isn't a wheatwine essentially a weizenbock? :stuck_out_tongue:

Another Bruery beer, which is a very good representation of the style, and perhaps within reaching distance to you, is White Oak. I would also suggest Founders Sweet Repute, if you see it.

Talk about a style that has kind of disappeared. I've really enjoyed the few I have had, but it's not like there are very many.
The Ft. Collins Brewery used to have a really good one, but I think it's long gone with their revised line-up.

That's something you're not going to find often. Besides the Smuttynose, you probably can get Boulevard's Harvest Dance (seasonal). Definitely a niche style (currently, who knows, next year it may be all over).

Good question that I would be curious to know too... if there's a difference it might be the yeast [as you mentioned] and more flexibility with hopping.

I agree that White Oak from the Bruery is a great wheatwine.

I really like their texture when they are done real well, quite a neat style, but getting pretty obscure these days.

I could see age helping that one along. I'm not a huge fan of the style, so 'fresh' was likely lost on me a bit.

Man I wish there were wheat wines available in Mexico, but there aren´t. I´ll homebrew some soon.

I've yet to have an aged wheatwine that was better than it was fresh just MO

Boulevard's Harvest Dance Wheat Wine, Dangerous Man Hopped Wheat Wine, Ithaca Beer Company Excelsior 13 Anniversary Ale, and New Holland Pilgrim’s Dole wheat wine arer all interesting. Dangerous Man is only available in growlers at the brewery in NE Minneapolis and Ithaca's was a one time brew but the other two are generally avaliable. And no, they are nothing like a Weizenbock. I have aged both the Harvest Dance and the Pilgrim's Dole and they do gain a little character but they do not do as well as barley wines. They are best within a year or so.
