What do you consider a valid replacemt for Julius (IF any) ?

I was lucky enough to drink a growler about a year ago my brother gave me. Had no clue at the time what it was and certainly didn't appreciate it at the time. I've been drinking sculpin grapefruit and some blood Orange beer. Not satisfied

I live in buffalo, with my distro what would be a replacement ? I'm looking for lots of citrus, crisp.

Thanks for your time. If your read this your awesome. If you replied your a gentleman and a scholar .

Julius is unique and pretty difficult to replace. Have you tried Fiddlehead Mastermind? It is more grapefruit than Julius, but is amazing as well.
If you really really like a lemon taste to your beer, try Lemon Cello, which is around in stores now, but to me it tastes like they added artificial lemon flavoring.
Another option that you may be able to get is Maine Beer Company Another One which is very good and citrusy.

Any Trillium IPA -- Melcher St or Congress St to start with. Easy to get -- as long as you are in Boston.

Thank you all for your input. Life lesson learned. Nothing worse than drinking an incredible/hard to get beer not realizing. Now I'm chasing the Dragon..now I pay attention to what I'm drinking.

I say continue to explore. You might find a beer you like more. Plenty of amazing beers out there so no need to chase just one.

My "home brewery"... well, closest to my house anyways. The closest thing I've had to Julius is Curiosity 13 from TH. I swore they did a mistake labeling the cans because it was spot on. TH reminds me a lot of Lagunitas. Not because they taste alike (not even close really) but the "base" to most of their beers have a distinct taste/ flavor that you get in the majority of their offerings. I really haven't had anything that is comparable.

I'm also not going to tell you to chase beers. It's addicting and fun, but I will say that it's usually a let down. Some of my favorite beers I've had from across the country have been extras in trades that I had no clue about.

You say you didn't appreciate it at the time, so why do you want something similar to a beer you didn't think twice about until, I assume, you read the reviews?

I was in Buffalo last month and loved Hayburner by Big Ditch. Get that fresh from your local brewery and be happy.

Not concerned about the reviews. It was simply I had a very delicious beer. I really enjoyed and figured I could just go to the store and grab another one. Nope. Ok figured I would just grab something else that to me sounded like what I drank. That hasn't worked out yet. Then I looked it up to do a better comparison and found out it's a really good beer. Figured I would ask on here because for the most part people are friendly and willing to engage in conversation.
For some of the veterans out there know that it's not easy trying to figure "this"(beer as a whole) out. I am sure it was hard for you too. Personally I think a lot of people that are veterans are annoyed by newer people in the scene and it comes across (in person)

Really, I wouldn't blame you. I have been in line recently for kbs and parabola and a lot of people are rude and out of line . Poor beer manager gets yelled at by customers, lying saying they don't have to wait or called ahead and resevered bottles. It's crazy. So when I show up and can't pronounce parabola correctly I get tons of attitude. I stay polite and wait in line. I make it a point to always be respectful no matter what.

My point is, I know there are a lot of dumb people out there. But make it a point to help the good guys out. You were new too. And most have . So thank you very much for your input and kind thoughts. Food for thought

The thing I do is try and find out the ingredients of a beer and search my area for beers made with the same or similar ingredients. Usually it's not very successful though as many breweries don't use the same yeasts and hopping regiment and that information can be hard to find and highly guarded (i.e. Heady).

Most of Trillium's hoppy stuff comes pretty close. The haze, the juicy taste and the beautiful hop body through all of their stuff is a really good start.

From personal experience, I'd say Congress Street or DDH Congress come the closest to Julius. Probably easier to land Congress in a trade than Julius since it's produced more often. Happy trading/tasting sir!

Love Julius, might be my favorite beer. Closest thing I have had to it was NEBCO's Fuzzy Baby Ducks (also amazing). Only problem is that it might be even harder to get. Not sure if that helps? But grab it if you ever get a chance. Cheers!

There is nothing easily availablein buffalo that is on the same level. That I am aware of.

That said, a couple that are close are Maine lunch and Maine another one. And alpine IPAs. I have seen both at premier recently but they come and go quick.

more Julius is coming....but no plans for distro into NY. I can't really think of anything widely avail that really comes very close.

Tree House just moved into a new brewhouse with 6x the production capacity and Nate's been getting to know the new system with some great new recipies. He's studying hard and I think he's got it all down. In a very short time, you should be able to trade for some in cans. If I'm reading the tea leaves correctly, Nate might have just brewed the first big batch of J a week ago. If that's correct, there should be a least a few cans floating around in ~2 weeks. If it's not J, you can be sure it'll be just as delicious!

and psssst, Green is even better...

Head over to Community Beer Works and get a fill of That IPA or Triploid! Or grab some Hayburner IPA from Big Ditch. Both were very impressive last month and closely match the great stuff in the Bay Area coming out of Faction, Cellarmaker and SARA!
