Huge expense? Hardly. Every brewery in the EU has to date their beer by law and they manage to do this without too much difficulty.Even the tiniest brewery copes remarkably well. I visited a small (10 barrel) brewery when this regulation came in, the main cause of worry was actually picking a suitable "use by" date - not knowing how the beer would be treated once it left the brewery- the actual bottle marking was easily dealt with temporarily by using adhesive date strips and then by incorporating it into the labels.

There are significant differences, and a US brewer can definitely make those 3 german beers. I am not sure, I'm buying your logic that it's because it sells better and that they didn't actually brew a Kolsch. (I homebrew kolsch and blonde and they're totally different).

But, that said, I went to a small brewery in northern wisconsin and got served a "lager," that was MOST DEFINITELY an ale. I believe that they did that so that the locals would buy it because lager is more "normal," beer, but, it's insulting to the customers and insulting to the beer. if you want to sell a lager, fricking brew a lager.

I'm sorry. I don't have family that can care for my kid without months of pre-planning, and I can't get a baby sitter just for a run to the store. When I grew up, I went in liquor stores with my parents. But, be sure you tell me which liquor store, so I don't accidentally go there.

Anyone have issues with teenage children going to beer stores with you? Everyone in my party seems to get carded these days.

These two posts were right next to each other but describe one of my least favorite characters in a bar - the talks about his beer too much even though the doesn't have a clue what he's talking about guy.

Liquor stores that keep beers on the shelf WAY past their shelf life. I know by now to check for dates, but it could lead to an unpleasant beer drinking experience for someone who doesn't know about the freshness impact.

No bottle dating and wax caps. The wax looks cool but does nothing but infuriate me, make a mess and make it harder for me to enjoy the damn beer

I don't like how people always compare a beer they are drinking to some rarer harder to find beer of the same style.

Example, this barrel aged barley wine is nice but its no bourbon county. Or this IPA is tasty but its no heady topper, or this barrel aged stout is good but it's no Kentucky breakfast stout..could go on for days.

Drink the beer on its own merit, if it drinks good that should be enough. This kind of thinking turns enjoying beer into an ale popularity contest and takes away from the enjoyment of trying different beers.

Out of curiosity, is it the presence of kids in the store general that bothers you or when parents bring in kids and let them run about like wild animals, thus creating added anxiety the issue?

If it's due to potential damages from wild kids, than I'd have to 100% agree with you. If it's just their presence in a place where you don't think kids have any business being, than I'll offer you my side of it. I'll take my 11 year old son and 14 year old daughter into TW with me if we happen to be about town and it's on my list of stops. My son has gotten into "craft sodas" (we don't let either kids drink soda with reckless abandon, so tastier "craft" sodas once or twice a week is the taste satisfaction of a case of Bud Light v. one or two craft beers.....I guess.....) so he'll peruse through the sodas for a bit. My daughter will observe some of the more fun or unusual labels because she loves art and can appreciate the artwork on labels. My kids have also developed a respect for the fact that I do drink a few beers at home 3 -4 times a week, drink responsibly and don't go into debt to do so. So basically, I feel like we are removing a stigma from beer (hopefully alcohol in general) that leads them to believe that alcohol is no big thing once they turn of age, or get in a situation underage where alcohol may be available. By trying to shield them from alcohol, I would think that there would be a danger of the "forbidden fruit" and them going wild with alcohol once they had a chance. All this being said, I rarely, if ever, go to actual liquor stores (in VA they are state run and do not sell beer).

I see what you did there!...it's worse when the last two bar seats are taken by a 6 year old and a 10 year old eating their cheese pizza. Please ask for a table.

You mean there's like 50 people who claim they are aficionados who really aren't? I ask because surely you aren't dissing people that are in their 50's who enjoy craft beer. Lots of us who are nearing our 50's or those in their 50's have been drinking craft beer since late '80's and early '90's. And as someone who lived in GR at one time, I feel like I'd probably be right there with those others.

"Beer bars" that use shaker pints... And/or frosted glasses.

Bars that say they offer great local beer options, but they serve it in plastic cups.

Personally, and others may think I'm crazy, when I buy an IPA, I really like to know what hop varietals were used. I mean, when you buy a bottle of wine, they tell you what grapes are in there. Are they worried it would lose some mystique or spoil the recipe?
