I ran into one of the girls who worked at my local Craft Beer Bar (her and the boss had a falling out), she's now working at a pretty busy sports bar. Although the volume can't compare, she told me that percentage-wise, the tips were way better at the old joint

So, was this an anomaly, or do you think Craft Beer drinkers are better tippers?

Anomaly. I would argue that it has more to do with the cost of a bill at a craft bar vs a sports bar more than craft drinkers as a population being good tippers.

Unless you really do something awful, I tip 20%. So if I get 3 beers at a craft bar at $6 each, the tip would be $3.60. Flip side if I got three $2 drafts at a sports bar, they're getting a tip of $1.20. I'm not cheaper, just tipping based on my bill.

It may be a function of income.

It probably varies a lot. I'm a former server, therefore I'm a good tipper everywhere. Craft beer tippers should be good tippers in general since its a hobby/habit that tends to be more expensive and therefore the average of the overall population of craft drinkers is probably a bit more affluent than the average sports bar crowd. There's definitely an intersection there, but I'd bet anything the average is higher.

I tip well but it's not because of the beer I drink, it's because of the appreciation I have for the service I receive.

I've tend to over tip when my beer server shows passion & knowledge about the beer that they serve. If they put that much effort into researching what they are serving they give a shit about their job.

I am honestly embarassed by how poorly some of my friends tip, my guess is most of them never spent anytime on the other side of the bar.

When the service comprises pulling a pint from a tap and placing it in front of me, I generally tip two bucks for the first and a dollar for each subsequent brew regardless of the beer's price or the venue in which I'm drinking it. I don't know if that's good or bad but I do know it's habit.

This "craft" drinker doesn't tip at all. That's because tipping is simply not expected in these parts. I do though normally receive exemplary service.

Anomaly. I think it’s the type of bar. Folks who go to sports bar are there for the TV so the beer and bar food is simply for filling time so tipping doesn't seems less important.

It didn't hurt that she was young and extremely cute, and most of the guys in the bar are 40-50 years old:slight_smile:

Id like to think that most people tip the usual 10-15% and some 15%+. But ive witnessed people do some horrid math and leave 10 cents on $13 tab and $2 on $60 tabs. So no not everyone is a good tipper.

I'm a solid 18-20% tipper across the board. Sometimes that varies for a quick walk up to the bar, in which case 'a dollar per drink' deviates from that (sometimes higher, sometimes lower depending on the prices of course).

Judging by the number of people that express surprise or even argue when I say I tip a buck or 2 on growler fills, I'd say there are plenty of craft beer drinkers that are not particularly good or generous tippers.

You need to tip better when you've tried 4 samples before that full snifter.

Dollar a beer or 20% of the total. Even if I'm buying Lonestar longnecks--especially if I'm buying Lonestar longnecks. But I'm a craft beer drinker who thinks of himself as a good tipper, so this data set might be skewed.

You guys tip in pubs! WTF?! Over here we just occasionally buy the staff a drink, and that's in your local where you go regularly!!

BTW we tip on food, it's not that we're not appreciative of service, but in a pub, the staff would think you were crazy or hitting on them bad!

We also don't have taxes built into posted price tags. It's anarchy over here in the colonies.
