I have experienced this at least 5 times. But more recently this weekend at 2 different establishments. Both are family restaraunt/pubs, mostly known for the BMC selection. 1st place, I looked at tap list to see Loose Cannon ipa, perfect. I order and server says, do you want that in 16oz or 22oz. Easy answer, 22oz please. 2nd place, has a small local brewery IPA on tap. This server says 12, 16, 22, or 25oz. Ummm, 25oz please! Both places the beer was $6-7. Granted I live in the burbs so prices are lower than Boston. But besides that tall pours of quality craft beer with slightly higher ABV. "Am I in heaven" Trust me I am not complaining. I imagine both places are just serving beer in the glasses they have regardless of what it is. No complaints here, because I know the "value" of each beer. Money/ABV. Its a welcome trend, in moderation of course. Especially since most high end craft places giving you 12oz pours as a "large" Anyone else experience this?

I have seen that and it rules. Also, I live in KC and some places around here (notably the AMC theater we like to go to) will have Tank 7 (an 8.5% delicious Farmhouse Ale) as an option for buckets and things along side Blue Moon and Fat Tire for the same pricing. A bucket of Tank 7's? Yes please!

One of my favorite bars in Chicago does this. Fat Pour in Wicker Park has the normal serveing and the "Fat Pour" which is 22 or 25oz i cant rememmber. Last time I was there they had Fat Pours of Breakfast stout for like 9 or 10 bucks.

A couple places in my neck of the woods you pay the same price right across the tap list per pint.
Get a pints of Peche Mortal or La Fin Du Monde for the same price as session beers and they wonder why they need bouncers.

There's a bar in my condo complex that had Breakfast Stout on tap for a month, $4.75 for a 16 ounce pint. And I've been to some local placese that would serve Little Sumpin' Sumpin in 22oz for $6. I certainly am not complaining at all.

I think it really comes down to the bar-whether it's a chain or local- simply not wanting to invest in 4-5+ different styles of glasses. I"m sure the bulk of their beer is Guiness/BMC stuff..the bartenders know the 12-16-22 ounce glass so just use them..Kinda reminds of some other thread i saw here about informing someone if they're really undercharging..Should I have told my local bar that you could easily sell Breakfast Stout for $6 for a 13 ounce pour? I did one night and they didn't care. my conscience is clear:slight_smile:

I've found that a lot of the chain places do this. BWW, TGI Fridays, Chilis, etc. I always opt for the largest size of course. They normally have at least one or two decent beers, if not more.

I know this probably makes me insane, but I will typically NOT order a beer that comes in a 16 oz. pint. I seek out those that are served in 12 oz. or 9 oz. tulips or snifters. Usually, those are the higher ABV beers, which I tend to order more of anyway. But sometimes I want something lower in ABV and am dissuaded by the 16 oz. pint or 22 oz. wheat beer glass. It must be psychological, but to me beer served in a tulip or a snifter just tastes better.

I don't care what the price is, I don't want 22 oz. of any IPA. I really like places that have various sizes, IPAs on average are too strong for larger glassware.

Great local wing joint (think BW3 but hotter girls and better food) has our local Columbus Brewing Company IPA on tap all the time for under $5 for a 22oz. I always tell the wife, "I'll just order the takeout when I get there...not sure what I want just yet." Yes I do, some me time and a $5 22 oz delicious IPA!

In the same way I hate 22oz bottles, 22-25oz glasses don't interest me. Pints are the standard bar pour around me, and more frequently they're starting to offer smaller options. One place offers 16/10/5oz pours, and another offers 1/.5/.3 liter choices.

I was at one place that was serving Imperial pints of DFH 90Min. Finish it off and the bartender asked if I wanted another, I was like, "Um, no. I kinda have to drive home: I would like to make it alive and un-arrested for DWI."

Glad to see this occurring nationwide. I knew it probably was, and its cool to see just as many people enjoy it as much as I do.

Great Lakes Brewpub in the Cleveland Airport. I ordered a Blackout Stout, and they asked if I wanted a tall or a short. I asked the size difference - a "short" was 20 oz. and a "tall" was 23 oz. Good thing I was flying.

Hell, I'd go there just to suck those down & watch the luggage go by...it would be like Beerfest meets The Terminal & realizing neither of them were surely as good as Airplane, and don't call me Shirley:wink:

You aren't alone, I don't like being forced to drink that huge of a beer glass either. Think that's why I'm starting to prefer places that allow one to order a small 6 or 8 oz flight glass of a beer, instead of a bigger pour from a tap into a glass. And *sigh* that I see someone mentioned Fatpour above, since I've never had good experiences going to that bar. More power if you like that place, but it just isn't for me. I really wish the Division location of Smallbar didn't close, last year. :slight_frown:

I totally agree. I don't want anything more than a pint at a time. Ever. It gets to be way too much, especially once it gets on the warm side.
