I have a pretty set schedule, so if I need off, I have to request it about 2-3 weeks in advance...we do have some weekends close to Xmas, that we can't ask off for, but we have a holiday briefing every year, and that is known, going into the holiday season

@Phocion's Pro/Con post, is dead on correct

Retail is busiest nights, weekends, and holidays. You know, the times folks with 9-5 "real" jobs have off. And, there's a stack of resumes just waiting in the wings. That's how they get away with being so demanding.

Another thing, all the "I'd love to talk about beer" comments. You get to talk about beer less than you think you will, and it will be the same handful of conversations over and over. Say it takes a half-hour for a customer to come in, have a pint, pick some bottles, pay, and leave. In a 8 hour shift, you're gonna have the same conversation 16 times.

Fuck everything about this post. If someone came in to our place looking for a job with that attitude they wouldn't make it halfway through the interview. No matter how much you know, there's always someone who knows more than you, and if you go spewing bullshit they'll know it. They may not call you out, but you can guarantee that they'll tell their friends about the full-of-shit "know it all" at the store, which makes you and the establishment look bad.

As someone that's been doing it since 2005 I gotta say I love almost everything about the job. I went in completely green with barely any knowledge of product except BMC and some "imports". Now just from being there 10 years and having a passion for it now I've gained so much knowledge mainly just from being around others in the business and reading online. Also helps that I get to sample just about everything. Yes having to deal with the NIP heads and occasional a-hole can wear on you ( my facebook page is my venting area ) for the most part it.s a great job if you're willing to do some physical labor. Since my OCD kicks in constantly the store is always fully stocked and faced. Plus the inventory is almost always in my head. Since it's my fulltime job I guess it only makes sense to be this way. Wish you were on Cape Cod cause we're looking for part time help as we speak! Need helping reloading the huge stack of Grapefruit Sculpin Cans that just arrived!
