Just read this tweet from BA:

"@BeerAdvocate: MT @Cicerone_org: Koch: "You can't put the same #beer in cans that you put in a bottle." Agree when I taste Torpedo in can. @CraftBizDaily"

What's this about not being able to put the same beer in cans as in bottles? Does this mean there's two different recipes for Torpedo? Is this true for all beers that have a canned version and a bottled version? Anyone have any more insight into this (especially you, SierraNevadaBill)?

I'm getting a headache trying to sort this out, or rather, make sense of it. We had overlapping supplies of bottled and canned Snake River beers and they seemed to be the same beers. Better from the can though.

While it's completely anecdotal, a friend and I did a blind taste test of 4 beers that are available in both cans and bottles: SNPA, Fat Tire, Moose Drool, and Shiner Bock.

While SNPA and Fat Tire had minute flavor differences between bottle and can, there was not a quality difference. Moose Drool was indistinguishable between cans/bottle.

Shiner, admittedly, was worse from the can, but there could be other reasons for that. It wasn't a freshness issue, as the cans and bottles had the same date on them, but it does get hot here. Maybe the cans sat in a truck for a while?

    Koch = Jim Koch?

Yes. In the previous tweet, he was talking about developing beer for cans because the can lining absorbs the beer flavor, supposedly.

Same here. Just wanted to see if there was any credence to koch's claim.

I thought the liner technology is at the point where the difference is slim to none in taste when compared to bottles. I'm open to suggestions, trying, and learning new things, but currently, my taste buds can't tell much (if any) difference. Is this high tech brewing or high tech marketing? I'll throw it out there because, honestly, I really don't know.

Ditto on SNPA and Torpedo tasting the same from the bottle and can. But, let me add drinking SNPA from the can while camping is an amazing experience.

I don't taste much difference between can and bottle with Sierra Nevada's beers. I prefer the cans because I can take them more places. Aside from that, I couldn't ever imagine myself pouring Surly Furious or Abrasive from a bottle. Just wouldn't feel right.

This is why I hate Twitter...I can't figure out who hell is saying what in the OP.
REGARDLESS, can linings do NOT absorb flavor, do NOT emit bpa (unless heated to extreme temperatures), and DO offer better protection from light, oxygen and breakage, in addition to being far more environmentally friendly.
So, whoever said whatever in the tweet is dead-ass wrong.

Weird you guys all mention specifically SN's beer tasting the same from can to bottle. The PA and Torpedo are two of my go-to beers, and the former has been for years now. When I first tried it in cans I immediately noticed a difference...for the better (which, since I am not an advocate for craft in cans, was neither the result I was expecting nor the bias I was going into it with). Since then, having gotten used to the cans, I have been able to pick out the canned version from the bottled multiple times in blind tests (with far better accuracy than mere chance). Just my experience.

Looks like this may have been a reference to something Koch said in a "subscribers-only" interview by BBD's Craft Business Daily. "Jim on Cans, Cider, and Cross-Coast Brewery Building" http://www.craftbusinessdaily.com/

you understand what this is right? this is jim koch being his usual marketing genius self. it's already been said that sam summer will debut in cans next year. i put my money that koch will "develop a can that is better than any can in the market" or some shit like that. same as that ridiculous glass that is un-stackable and brittle (every bartender i know hates them).

Unless it was a blind triangle test I couldn't care less if it was gods opinion. When some people judge beer in cans their opinion can just end up being a self fulfilling prophecy. When you perform a blind triangle test there is no chance for potential bias.

So apparently this is just Koch spouting some BS, like I originally thought. I'm starting to agree with the above post, that this seems to be a marketing gimmick.

I have learned never to listen to Jim Koch - his choice of words, and focus on spin and marketing, has become very similar to the macro players. Give me the honesty of Tony Magee.
