Whats the deal? Why has it not been made in so long. I know the brewmaster was taking a break but man...

Since Sip is virtually the same beer, but brewed at 2 Roads, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see in the foreseeable future. This is just speculation.

Don't get me wrong - I think there is a definite taste difference between SOS and VT brewed DS (both delicious with DS being my fav), but according to what I consider to be a reliable source SOS is DS just with the recipe adapted to be brewed on Two Roads much larger system.

Hadn't heard that (not doubting you at all), but that really is interesting considering that DS, as I remember it, is a vastly better tasting beer.

This was the initial blog post from lawsons on SoS:

DS is has a brighter flavor, and a slightly chewier mouthfeel, IMO.

Not good with the adjectives, but I always found Double Sunshine to be far more, I dunno, robust? than SOS. Definitely agree with BoldRulerVT on the difference in mouthfeel.

Not sure why Double Sunshine specifically hasn't been brewed recently, but in terms of schedule, I think that Lawson's has had a pretty packed year so far. I ran into Sean late last year and he looked pretty burnt out. He does the brewing and he does all of the distribution in VT. He has to deal with the bureaucratic and paperwork stuff too. He looked like he needed a break and I think he was able to get that late last year/early this year.

The Two Roads arrangement definitely is beneficial in that it allows him to not have to brew as frequently. It was also supposed to enable him to brew some of the special stuff. In terms of releases, he's had the Faystons come out. There's been Triple Sunshine. He's been consistently brewing Super Session, which I can't wait for cans of. There's been a lot of specialty stuff that's been on draft up there too (e.g. Kiwi Double IPA). It seems like there's been plenty of Lawson's out there, but I'm not sure why that hasn't included Double Sunshine. Hopefully, there'll be some appearing in the Summer.

I hope Hopcelot wasn't a one-off. That beer was fantastic.

I agree with this. Double Sunshine is more subtle and complex than Sip.

    not adapted very well(:.

    fully agree.

double sunshine is the perfect IPA. sort of nectary/honeylike in feel while still being juicy, powerful tropical and slightly dank hop flavor. sip of sunshine is very sharp and minerally.

i mean, sip of sunshine is *excellent*. i wouldn't pass on it. but double sunshine is probably the best IPA i've ever had... it's like the platonic form of IPAs. it's like a not-insignificant step or two above heady and the best HF and NEBCO can do, at least for me.

DS to me was far better and yes different. I say this in confidence as when I compared DS to other VT and great beers in the area DS was right up there as one of the best. I've now had sip numerous times. On its own and compared with other beers, all fresh at the time. This includes fresh sip on tap. In the end I felt Sip was the least favorite of the bunch to the point where I would not order it at a bar that had other "good" options. Hell I would order Fiddlehead IPA over it.

It's too bad since I have loved everything else I have had from Lawsons. I truly miss Triple Play IPA. I haven't seen or had it in forever but used to love that stuff.

No matter what SOS is not a bad beer, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. If I was at a bar and it was one of the better beers they had, sure I'd order it. but when I was at Res last it was one of the last beers I'd go for.

Sip, while almost always excellent, is pretty inconsistent. I've had it times that it tasted more like Double Sunshine than others, although with it having been so long since I've had DS I don't fully remember it enough to say how close. I prefer it to Heady but it is definitely more in my wheelhouse.

Triple Sunshine 2015 might be my favorite of all. I enjoyed it last year but thought it was just a little too boozy. Had one of my bottles from the anniversary a couple weeks ago and it was incredible.

I haven't had it yet but hope it's better than 3x. I have to say I was supremely disappointed. But maybe that's because of the hype around Lawsons in general

I agree with everyone that DS is on a whole other level from SOS. It's my favorite DIPA ever by a wide margin. I am not in any way trying to say DS and SOS taste the same, they don't. Maybe my information is way off (I don't believe that to be the case), but I do think it is suspicious that DS hasn't been made since SOS has become regularly available.

I have only had SOS once, when it first came out over a year ago, on draft at The Res in Waterbury, and did not think it the equal of DS, which has been my top rated IPA, although I have yet to try Triple Sunshine, which has been very hard to find. I too wonder at Sean's apparent neglect of the #10 rated BA bew, and wish he'd make more soon!

I don't put SOS in the same league as DS. Having had a decent amount of both, including triple sunshine, I'd definitely put DS as the best of the three with SOS being far below the other two. DS is probably my favorite ipa of all time along with Crom from rocky point and is better compared to HF ipas like Abner, ephraim, and society solitude #5 (haven't had double galaxy or double citra yet).
