I am a pretty light weight guy but I can always seem to handle a couple bottles of my favorite beers at home without feeling too much more than a buzz, but whenever I go to a brewery or taproom for dinner it seems like I get pretty woozy fairly quicky from just one or two beers. Does anyone know if there is any reasoning behind this or is it just the pace of drinking in that environment or maybe just all in my head?

Alcohol is alcohol no matter where you consume it. So when the amount is the same, the rate of consumption is probably at work. At the brewery you may well be in a social situation and not paying as much attention to how much/fast whereas at home....

ABV is ABV but what you eat prior to drinking matters. Drinking on an empty stomach will kill you every time.

I remember reading somewhere that you feel the effects of alcohol more pronounced in an unfamiliar environment rather than one you're habituated to. It has something to do with novel stimulation. I'll look for the article. So it's possible that it's not in your head.

I actually find it to be the opposite with me. I feel like I can drink more when I'm out and about without feeling inebriated because I'm more active and the alcohol runs through my system quicker (or at least that's the only explanation I can think of). When I'm at home, I'm just sitting and not moving or talking as much as I would when I'm out, and so the booze just sits in my stomach and absorbs more slowly. I've had many more "Man, I shouldn't have had that last beer last night" moments when I've stayed in than when I've gone out. And, for the record, I'm a pretty "lightweight guy" myself.

Novel stimulation is all about where your head is at. Some people are more able to be involved in the moment, so it's less likely that it'll affect them, or that they'll give a hoot that they are that far in. Others on the other hand can't hang with all of the additional ephemeral stimulation and go tits up, or get weird in a possibly humorous way.

Same thing happens to me. I get hammered pretty quickly at home on 1-2 beers, but recently I was out with friends and had 3 DIPAs with little effect.

I tend to feel the effects more when i'm out with friends / moving around versus sitting on my ass on the couch.

Drink more, you'll soon be less of a lightweight in terms of intoxication, and when you step on the scale.

Seriously food and water consumption and time are all huge factors here. Take note. I tend to get hammered quicker at home because im not concerned about keeping it together or getting myself home. Also I already bought the beer and don't have to keep pulling out my wallet or considering the costs.

Also when we're out my wife tells me I'm starting to make a fool of myself so I slow down. At home she is already passed out with a cat sleeping on her head.

there is ZERO correlation of "Buzz off (X)ounces of beer" in one location vs another, nor delivery method vs another. (tap v bottle v can).

diet and activity level may be a factor.

i cant believe this thread exists.

Not quite zero, @colforbin73 Altitude matters, so location can matter, especially if you live somewhere where you can be in multiple elevations quickly. Here in Phoenix we can travel about 2hours and be at 7000 ft. in Flagstaff for skiing and a few beers, then be back before sunset to have a few more beers at the pool. There is a difference.

But you're right about location as in home or restaurant, with no other factors like elevation and such.

You just need to drink more beer with regularity. You'll shape up in no time

You should eat food and then drink. As soon as you drink alcohol your body wont start processing the food. It treats the alcohol like poison and doesnt start processing the food

Ironically that sounds like its an effect occurring squarely in your head. But I guess you're objecting to 'in your head' used to mean 'not really happening'. Wacky turn of phrase.

(More seriously—while I'm open to that hypothesis, it appears that they don't have any statistically significant findings.)
