Knowing what I do of Cavedave from chats on here, I don't think he'll have any problem with you keeping things alive and on track until he gets back. (Indeed I'm thinking that one of his friends was behind that axed attempt to get things up and running.)

Cool. We have some of their mixed 6 packs in town. I bought the sour box. The Oud Bruin was a let down but the Aged Pale is delicious.

Hmmm. Sounds like we have the same tastes.... A friend of mine got the pack as a gift and we split them in a tasting. Exact same reactions. The Pale is now on my shopping list....

    New Breakfast Stout Sunday
Since I don't have a nice label to take a picture of, in case it's hard to read it's Total Eclipse from Maumee Bay Brewing Co
    [IMG]
I saw this one at the growler station of my local store and had to grab it. I can't say it reaches quite the level of a certain other breakfast stout brewed a bit north of Maumee Bay, but it certainly gives it a run for its money (actually $/oz and quality/value this one wins). A very pleasant mix of coffee and milk chocolate with a nice balance of sweet and bitter. Paired well with bacon, too  It's always refreshing to find a kick-ass brew from a fairly local, somewhat under the radar brewery.
    :
On the business side of things, who hosts doesn't matter to me as long as the community gathers each Sunday to celebrate drinking a new beer. I'll certainly be here as long as it's not the one Sunday each month I have to work. A clever intro is appreciated but not mandatory.
Happy Mothers Day to all of the BA/NBS moms!

Hello and a happy New Beer Sunday to everyone! I hope all of the mothers enjoy their day! I'm trying my hardest to give my wife a day she deserves. Unfortunately today I have no new beer, I'm recovering from more illness and have been having fun reactions to medication so I've been avoiding alcohol for the week. Should be good to go for next week though. I'll gladly throw my hat into the ring for volunteering to start the thread as long as I don't need to drink my beer before starting the thread. I feel like I've been around long enough where I can kick it off properly, so just let me know before hand and I'll get it going nice and early.

    Cheers!

I picked this up thinking of how it will compare to Boulevard's BBQ (Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad,) one of my favorites. The BA profile at http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28551/83567/ has a question mark for ABV, my bottle clearly states 12.7% (all of them pleasurable )

    4.34/5 rDev +4.6%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

    Poured from bomber into goblet.

Aspect: Hazy caramel with a slim white foam, leaving behind spotty lacing.

Smell: Great dark fruit smell throughout, with malt and booze keeping it company.

Taste: Rich dark fruit, wine-like flavors, the booze felt to me more like rum than whiskey. Very pleasant aftertaste, lingers for a while.

    Mouthfeel: Strong, almost creamy feel.

    Overall: Excellently done, 'upgraded' quad.

I only wish I'd picked up another bottle to leave it aging for some more.

I agree with the blurb above, those River North guys made it taste awesome.

My first beer from them, and I will seek them out from now on.

    Cheers!

Happy Mothers Day NBS everyone (and especially to any from whom progeny may have sprung forth [passive sentences ftw])!!
Reading those entries that come before me, I feel a little better about my own little week of malady. Get better Roger!!
As I was sick all week, I was not drinking. As I was not drinking, I still have pretty much everything I picked up in Oregon still in my fridge. As I still have pretty much everything I picked up in Oregon still in my fridge, I figured I should crack one of those for our little weekly celebration of all things zymurgical. As I figured I should crack one of those for our little weekly celebration of all things zymurgical, my offering today is Breakside's IPA.

This is a great base IPA. Pours a crisp clear medium amber with a massive head. Good retention and lacing. Nose is juicy citrus with enough supporting toast to keep things from getting too one dimensional. Maybe some grass. Flavour passes through several rooms before looking out the back door (doot doot doo). The foyer is pastel walls with framed family photos: nectar and orange blossoms. Continuing into the living room, where all the heavy lifting is done, we get heavier off green walls with old mismatched furniture, brass lamp fixtures, heavy drapes and poor lighting: a solid grapefruit presence (some of the sweet side, but also definitely the bitter as well). Gotta pop through the hardwood hallways which assert their presence, but are not a focal feature (solid toasted malts) to get to the kitchen. Kitchen is bright and airy if small, flowers in the windowsill and a black and white tile counter that brings forth the last citrus steps (sweet dashes of zest giving way to the cold bitter finish which lingers and lasts). The aforementioned back yard opens out from here with statues in high heels etc. The different aspects felt particularly compartmentalized, distinctively layered as opposed to blending and coming in waves. This is a very solid and thoroughly enjoyable single IPA, and I'd definitely say you should grab one if you come across it, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a can't-miss.

Hope everyone is enjoying the unfurling of spring (however far along it may be where you are...)

    Cheers!

    Good afternoon all!

It's a pleasure opening this beer up, which came from @Desp59. I'm not a traditional saison/farmhouse fan. However the result of throwing some lime and lemongrass into a saison that was aged in barrels makes me very happy.

    Nice. ..go for it.
some notes I found on it:

Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% beer from our oak foeders which has aged for 18-24 months. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s - and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Today, it is still the reference for sour beers in the US. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used as a blending-beer with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aroma's.

Totally enjoyed your post. I wonder if you could help me though. I am interested in what appears to be a bottle opener in the picture, and where I could find one? Thanks in advance for your help.

Happy Mothers day to all the mothers attending on this wonderful spring day here in central NH. It's 87 degrees here already and I've called a halt to all the yard work I had planned for the rest of the day. The only chore I have left will be grilling the leg of lamb I marinating in the fridge right now for dinner.

My new beer today is Whirlpool APA from Nightshift Brewing in Everett, MA. actually closer to me than some of the breweries here in NH. I received a 4 pack from a friend a little while ago and decided to venture there yesterday to see what else they had to offer. I ended up bringing home a case of Whirlpool and a case of Morph their ever evolving IPA series.

This Whirlpool canned on 5/5 pours a beautiful hazy yellow color with enough hazy that it will hide the things on the other side of your glass if you care not to see them.

For such a mild APA at 4.3 ABV this beer has a wonderful nose loaded with lots of lush citrus aroma.

The taste of this wonderful elixir proves to be it's strongest point IMO lots of peach and citrus flavors with very little bitterness in the back.

The mouthfeel is again a strong not overly carbonated very smooth throughout the whole glass.

All in all this maybe my favorite APA to this point and having close to 60 years of practice at this point that says quite a lot IMO. I actually told my better half that if I had to chose only one beer to drink right now that Nightshift's Whirlpool would be the one. But since I don't have to chose only one that leaves me open to find another great beer for next weeks NBS.

And as hard as I have tried some day I will finally figure out how to post a picture on this page but as of now I am still over challenged by that aspect of posting pictures here.
Cheers to all and may we all enjoy the rest of this wonderful day!

    Oh!
I forgot to mention it in my previous post:
I know we have some Northeast advocates up in here and I am looking for a little advice.
Next week I will be accompanying my sister to her reunion in southern New Hampshire. Friday and Saturday will be pretty well filled with reunion madness, but I have been placed in charge of figuring out our Sunday plans. As she is a fellow enthusiast of things involving grains and yeast and hops and the like, we wanted to take Sunday to appreciate some regional liquid.
As we will be occupied until roughly midday Sunday, and I fly out from Boston on Monday afternoon, we are somewhat limited in our exploratory efforts. My plan at this point is to drive up to Portland after lunch on Sunday, find a local 'packie' (that's what y'all call them, right?), and then spend the evening, getting food and beverages at some select local establishments. I really only settled on Portland because it seemed like it had some variety (and quality), was close enough and was metropolitan enough to have lodging options. Unfortunately, being as we will be there Sunday, some of my first choice spots will be closed :slight_frown:
Does anyone have any insight into this area? I'd love any suggestions for outlines for itineraries, areas to stay, can't-miss spots/bottles to pick up, alternate locational suggestions, etc and what-not?

Yes I left it to somewhat last minute. For me though, this is planning WAAAAY ahead. She knew leaving it to me I'd probably book something while I was in the airport waiting to take off!!

From my knowledge most of the bars in Portland will be open on Sunday, but most of the breweries are closed. I know that Banded Horn in Biddeford is open on Sunday afternoon. It might be worth the trip back to Boston on Sunday as I know that Nightshift is open on Sunday usually some great food trucks and some really good beers. Not sure what else is open in the Boston area as most of the southern NH breweries are closed on Sunday. I know Trillium is closed on Sunday.
