I sent a box out west and the recipient reported that three of the bottles broke. Should I ask for proof of the breaks, or believe him blindly? How should I go about asking him to validate the claims of broken bottles? I don't disbelieve him outright, I just wanted to know if there was a standard BA procedure for these sorts of things. I was planning on sending replacements but they are difficult to find. Should I send replacements? Thanks-- you're the BAst!

I'm surprised he didnt send proof right away. In the few instances where this has happened to me I immediately sent pictures. If he is an experienced trader he should know better

3 seems extreme. Especially if the package wasn't soaked and labeled "damaged in transit."

Also, i don't think anyone on here wouldn't have sent proof of breakage with the note ... these 3 bottles broke.

Also ... pictures of broken bottles days later don't really mean they actually broke in shipment. He could easily drink them and then break them.

I appreciate the feedback. I think we're both relatively new traders, so maybe he didn't know? Def very helpful for future instances. Thanks for responding!

He did mention the package was soaked and he had to sign for it... Very good point! Maybe it's too late to ask for proof? It arrived this afternoon.

It's really up to you. Since you're new at trading do you think maybe that there might be a chance that you didn't pack it well enough? I started using shippers on bottles I can replace. I even bubble wrap the bottles inside the shippers.

I bubble wrapped each bottle completely, used big air balloons on each side of the box, and filled the space with brown packing paper. I felt like it was pretty good. An identically packed box with more beers made it to MN safely, which is partially why I was skeptical. I understand this is part of the risk with trading and am ok with it. I'm just trying to make sure I'm not getting played for a fool, or screwing someone out of beer he should've received. I really appreciate your insight.

For future trades I'd use peanuts instead of those airbags since they can pop. I've also been known to put a 14x14x14 box inside a 16x16x16 box and used peanuts to fill the void. This was for bottles I could not replace. It's just one of those chances you take. For me it's worth the extra $3-5 to have the package get there. Hopefully it works out. Cheers!

Another thing you can do is ziplock the bottles in gallon size bags (works for most non 750s). Peanuts vs bubbles is a personal preference. I prefer bubbles as I can never seem to clean all the foam of my floor. Wine shippers also work well.

My friend told be about gallon ziplocks after the package was sent-- another good idea. I hadn't heard of those shippers until I started this thread. What is standard price for those? Can you cut the 12 bottles down to accommodate smaller counts, or should you just buy the smaller shippers? Thanks!

I think you should request pictures of the broken bottles & also the box. Explain that it's standard procedure when trading. IF there was any chance of pursuing a claim you'd need the pictures. In large part I think you should do this so your trading partner develops good instincts for such situations.

And I think you should replace the broken bottles.

Not only should you request pictures but have him include his BA username in the pictures. It's easy to find pictures on the internet. Or maybe I'm just paranoid about people's dishonesty. No picture/no resend.

@treznor I was really just using that site to show the different options. I started receiving these boxes (2 bottle, 3 bottle, 6 bottle, 12 bottle) shippers from trades. You could find friends who are willing to split the cost of the boxes. I've also purchased 12 bottle styro shippers from Uhaul that I've used when I travel to beer releases and carried them back (as checked luggage) and had friends ship them back.

There has been 2 times that I have had bottles break in shipment and I believed the trader no questions asked and replaced the bottles and included some additional extras for the troubles (maybe im just too trusting). Another time I had a single bottle break while trading with a regular friend/partner of mine. I sent him a picture right away but thankfully it was just a simple extra that broke so I didn't need a replacement.
