Would you drink one that was bottled 6 months ago? That seems like an eternity for an ipa. There's one in the back of my fridge that I forgot about and I'm contemplating it...

Burton Baton is an oak-aged DIPA, so yeah, I'd drink it, but I'd make a point of seeking it out fresher in the future, too.

Yes, definitely. It's still a great (if not better) beer with some age on it.

Well I opened it... tastes pretty good, not much hop presence, lots of malt, is that normal?

I've had it fresh and the last one I drank had 8 months on it and enjoyed every last sip. It definitely had changed to a very sweet, caramel/toffee, brown sugar and creamy taste and had no hop presence at all but I loved it. In fact I have another bottle with a date of 8/05/14. Perhaps I'll drink it tonight....

In conclusion, it won't taste the same as being fresh but will still taste great; just in a different way.

It's still going to be good, it will just change in time. Yes, it will become more malt-forward, but continue to be good. It's definitely a sipper, IMO..

Surprised you didn't find it hoppy. I have had one at less than 4 weeks, and at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 months. While I did notice a big jump in flavor from 6 - 12, not so much up to 6 months. It is fairly malty anyway and has a huge oak nose and flavor. This is a great beer to age. I love it at any point.

At that age you are kind of in between fresh and aged. That said Baton is a great beer and won't let you down.

I've had it at a year and still got a decent amount of hops. Nothing like shelf aged beer haha, go for it

This beer is amazing with age. I still have 2-3 left from 2012.wish I had more. Drink it and buy more and put them away for years. 90 minute is great with age as well

    Enjoy

I had it a year along; still very nice but of course different than fresh. Found some recently only three weeks old. Reminded me why this is and has been my favorite and highest rated beer. It gets better and better with each next sip.

Drank my last cellared Burton last week. At 2.5 years it was still pretty good. The best bottle I've ever had was at about the 2 year mark. Better than most American Barleywines by a fair margin.

Burton Baton was described as a blend of Old Ale and DIPA by DFH, so it's not a traditional IPA by far.

I've had the opportunity to try this beer with 1, 2, and 3 years of age on it and my favs were 1 and 3. I believe it would hold up even longer.

That said, I've been waiting for it to pop up in SoCal again at the volume its seen before. Prob my fav DFH brew.

The first time I had it was at a bar selling it as a Double IPA. I wasn't impressed. Maybe it starts as a Double IPA, but that's pretty far from what the finished product is.

Understanding that now, it's one of my favorites to age. With a year on it, it's delightful. Just don't go into it thinking you're going to be getting a mouthful of hops. It's actually a pretty nuanced beer and DFH deserves a lot of credit.
