My brother claims he saw a 12 oz. Dogfish Head bottle in his local shop with no label (just the DFH cap) being sold for $20+. For the life of me I cannot figure out what it could possibly be and he doesn't remember what they told him it was. (There is also a very legitimate possibility that he is completely wrong about the brewery and the price). Anyone have any ideas?

as far as I know, current laws require certain information to be on the package for every product being sold.
I suppose there is a change the label on this bottle fell off or came off some other ways.
If they're selling for $20, I would suspect it's a WWS, 120Min, possibly Raison D'Extra, or something like that - I personally wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

That's kind of shady, I'd steer clear of that bottle shop

Unless it was actually a Westy 12, in which case he should make that bottle shop his new home

I know a bar that get new releases from some of the local breweries and they are normally in just plain cans with no labeling, this is normally for new releases so not sure. Would buy it for $2 just for the hell of it but not $20

Also, the expensive high abv bottles from DFH have those neon yellowish caps. Was it one of those?

I also recently saw some four packs of unlabeled DFH beers in Lexington KY. They had copper caps and I think, but not positive, the cardboard holder said Burton Baton.

He couldn't remember the color. I might need to go check it out for myself. The most expensive 12 oz. DFH bottles i've seen (120, Raison D'Extra, and WWS) have not been more than $11 anywhere on Long Island, and this place is otherwise very fairly priced, so I don't think it was those, but who knows...

Interesting -- do you remember how much they were listed for?

DFH Brews under 9%abv sport bronze caps. From 9% to 14.9%, red caps. And 15% and over have the neon yellow caps with the "shark exclamation point" logo. The only exception that I am aware of is Palo Santo Marron, which has a pink-ish cap with a wood grain motif on it.

If it was a bronze cap, might it have been Saison du Buff?

Burton Baton bottles have red caps, not bronze.

I wonder to myself if this is something like 120 minute which might be resold illegally (breaking ABV limits or otherwise) and scratching off the label was the store's clever way to try and hide it.

Why not call then store and ask?

Would be illegal to sell, the only time I've seen blank bottle or cans is maybe a distributor or rep tasting bar or store owners on a product about to launch. For example when Old Chub Nitro launched last year the rep gave me a completely white can to try a couple weeks before it launched. So maybe this guy is selling a DFH prototype, LOL!

Some of the bigger beers (120, WWS. etc.) come in plain white four pack holders, but the individual bottles are labeled. $20 seems quite high for any of Dogfish Head's 12 oz. offerings.

I had two 120s sitting for a while. Each time I went to drink one, the label just fell off in my hands. I'd have to think it would be more than just 120 that uses that particular glue but whatever it is, I'd imagine it wasn't delivered this week.

I'm going to side with the label having fallen off, maybe intentionally because of an ABV restriction. If it's an older vintage that would easily explain the higher price-point. I'd probably buy it just to solve the mystery.

Its 240 min. Only 6 produced. Nice score :sunglasses:
In all seriousness sounds like a label fell off a 120.

I know exactly what you're talking about. You know what, I bet it was just those white boxes and when he relayed the story to me, I assumed he meant the label on the bottle (like a normal human being would)... I should have put two and two together. He also probably wildly exaggerated the price. I am betting it was a four pack of 120s, with the single 12 oz. bottled being sold for $12 or something.

    Thanks, all, for your input!
