Split the bottle/cost or buy it solo?

I voted share the price, because after all, isn't that what advocating good beer is about? Sharing the experience with friends and like minded people! Although if the other person still doesn't want to buy it, then buy it yourself!

@beertunes Thank you for not divulging the identity of the beer in question. It would take the fun out of the thread. I too thought it might be Cascade and it would make sense since I've heard of others splitting the cost of Cascade bottles to share. But, regardless, allow me to suggest what I would do in your situation. Assuming this is a somewhat close friend you're talking about and that the beer is not in an extreme range of ABV (13%-18%), make it a mini bottle share. You supply a couple of nice bottles, he supplies a couple of nice bottles and you make the beer in question part of the share. I routinely do this with a good friend of mine who also happens to be my neighbor. Yes, you would have to set aside a day/night that you're both free, but it sounds like this bottle is worthy of such an occasion. If he's just some random co-worker acquaintance you wouldn't be looking forward to sharing a beer drinking session with, buy the bottle and enjoy every last drop for yourself.

If you can afford the $30 without it impacting your finances then why would you deny yourself the potentially great experience? Your personal dollar per ounce rule can be relaxed, I am sure, as nobody is enforcing it but you. You get one go around and it seems like a lot of thought wasted over trying to justify yourself some pleasure. I guess you know how I voted so enjoy your beer experience.

My inclination is just to buy the damn beer, if you don't you might regret not trying it. But splitting the beer has the social aspect to it so that is good too, but either way you are buying the damn beer, so buy the damn beer and then figure out the rest.

Just buy the whole beer. It's not much more than $1/oz anyways.

Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay....

....oh, it's a 750 ml? Were you planning to drink the whole bottle? If so, just purchase the bottle for yourself! If not, split the bottle. And if splitting a $27 bottle between two people isn't worth it to you, there's plenty of quality beer on the shelf which costs less.

Like anything in life, you usually get what you pay for. I've transformed from "buck a beer", but not sure if I'm comfortable with "buck an ounce". If you're interested and able to pay, carpe diem.

I never split the cost of a single bottle, but I will purchase a pricey option and coordinate with friends to have them purchase some beers that get close to a $4$ arrangement. If it doesn't work out close though, I'm never worried about it.

And as for $27...I feel that lately I'm ok with this price point. Just had my most expensive single bottle purchase this month when I ordered a 2013 Grey Monday at $41.30. That hurt a little, but it's a really good beer and this is really my only true hobby, so I went for it.

I say go for that shit but only if it was aged in an ancient teakwood barrel that has an interior lining of baby white seal intestines and fermented with Belgian yeast infused with powdered blood diamonds.

Let us not turn our awesome love of beer turn into the snobbish unattainable world of fine wine

I would probably split the cost but I'm a cheap bastard like that.

I have a general amount that I'm willing to spend on different sized bottles/cans. I don't normally go over that, but I will make exceptions if it's a beer I've wanted to try for a long time, or something I doubt I'll see again soon.

Sorry if I've missed it, but at least can you tell us what type of beer it is. $27 for a DIPA - no thanks. For a wild / BA stout / anything that's required extra time and/or expense, I would probably go for it - if it's from a tried and true brewery.

Having said that. If you have a $1/oz rule, which you've never broken, then maybe I'd be inclined to stay strong. Cos once the rule has been broken.....

But having said that - in the long run, the $1/oz rule (which I used to very easily be able to stick to a couple of short years ago) is quickly heading the way of the dinosaur - both in terms of craft prices, but also just due to long-term inflation etc etc

lol. $/oz is a stupid argument. $/anything is stupid. No offense to you, but to the mentality too many people have here. Either you want the beer or you dont. I regularly split bottles because i just dont want to drink a liter and a half of a heavy stout by myself. no biggie. BA Speedway was ~45$ i believe. Now THAT is tough to stomach.

That being said, just buy it. If you want it, buy it.

Beer aficionados are split on price elasticity, some of us are not elastic at all, others are very much so.

Tough to let go of it nevertheless—I still have trouble when I find that pants cost more than $20.

Generally I do stick to less than $1/oz, but my actual rule is if I find myself thinking about a particular beer more than three times, I get it. edit: And it's never let me go so far as to make a thread about wanting a beer. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I've broken it before. And, as I mentioned above, there are more and more beers in this range these days. I just have a hard time finding any value above $1/oz, because, after all, it's just fucking beer, ya know? We all have to draw our own lines on things. For some, $1/oz is nothing, but maybe their line is drawn at $4/oz. There's been some interesting thoughts in this thread. Thanks all!
