Silverback Stout - The Unknown Brewing Co.

    -----------------------

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Deep mocha brown head, booming, and balloon growing out of the can from the pour growing like a giant opening fist. Large retention, but not going anywhere, a bit borderline ridiculous as half the glass is filled with head space. Classic dark walnut brown mahogany body, a hint of red edges but for the most part deep brown, totally opaque and very dark.

Aroma is filled with deep chocolate notes. Thick notes of chocolate, hints of peanut butter as well, and some good roast bodied character. Thick and rich smelling, a bit large and bordering on chocolate overkill. Still manages to showcase other flavors, a hint of clove and dark spices round out the very nice bouquet.

Very unexpected but enjoyable palate. First sip washes a light huge roast character, bringing out a big amount of leafy green hops but also rich and bitter tobacco notes. Chewy light body, deep roast character bordering on piping hot coffee warmth and flavor, plenty of depth to style to keep the flavors present. Lime like astringent finish which accents the roasted malts with a hint of bitterness and makes a toasty character a little bit more present.

Overall, very unexpected 180 from the nose to the palate, which at times can make for a not so enjoyable experience. Here however, it's worked as a surprising fun contrast. Very decent stout.

    look: 3.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4 | BA Score: 4.03

Not sure if we got new beers for Sunday today after this, haul is getting quite empty.. might have to wait till tomorrow.

    Cheers folks!

Greeting, NBSers. Beautiful (if a bit humid) day here in NJ. I'm finished with all my tasks, so I figured it was time to relax and try a new beer. Starting off easy with Stone's Pale Ale 2.0. Looked great when I poured it...

See? Anyway, the aroma is somewhat bready, even a little burnt toast maybe. Kind of a different taste, hard to put my finger on it. I don't get a lot of hops here, it's more on the malty side, which can be good for a pale ale. It does finish with some lingering hops, but I don't get any of the mandarin orange flavor. It's just a decent pale ale. I bought a single and I don't see myself buying this again. Oh, well, time to move on!

Expect to say that it tastes great I don't know what to say about this brew but I'll try. There is a sort of mixed fruit aroma and flavor and this brew is very dry and extremely refreshing. I think I'm going to go and get another bottle.

good afternoon ba's !!! turned out to be an awesome day for everyone else here in CT, alas i'm stuck indoors working again. by the way sorry I missed out on everyone last week as I was let's say unable to type  these arrived this week at my store and was dying to try one, so......... why not take one out of the cooler and give it a shot.
average poor revealed a huge fluffy white head(sorry about the glass it's all I had), smelled like nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary, but the taste........holy plum. not in a bad way. a little sourness after the intital plum bite but good not rotten plum sour. I'd say this one was a good shot (not a miss or a homerun) very quaffable for almost 8% as well.

enjoy the rest of your day everyone, I got s#$% to do as im almost outa here

I needed a relacation type day today and this one was calling me to try it, so I gave it a shot. I had high expectations becasue I loved the first beer in the series
    [IMG]
Appearance: hazy golden/ light amber color with some visible carbonation, 2 finger white head
Aroma: really nice aroma lot of citrus right away mostly orange but some grapefruit and lemon too. And some nice pine too
Taste: pretty much matches the aroma exactly but a little weaker. Not too much backbone to it
Mouthfeel: medium body with bright carbination
Overall: very good, nice ipa for this time of year. Not quite as good and the first one in the series, but quite refreshing..... 4.11/5

New beer today is Bell's Saturn...the bourbon barrel aged barleywine in the planet series. I was able to piece together a full 6 pack by visiting 3 different local shops that each had 2 bottle limits. Dont call me a truck chaser, it was over the course of 2 weeks and only bought so i could leave open the possibility of aging some out.

Beer pours a lighter burnt orange, lighter amber. Very transparent but at the same time tons of floaties.

On the aroma....Huuuge toffee character for me, some butterscotch, vanilla as well. Hints and flashes of sweet bourbon, not overpowering but not hidden at all. Spicy oak.

On the taste....man, those toffees just are right in the forefront for me, wonderful creaminess follows w/ vanilla, coconut. Toasted malts and lots of sweet bourbon just wraps its arms around everything and amplifies it. Very dry on the finish, you get a lot of the barrel there...oak, spice, earthy wood. There is some fusel alcohol notes that linger, but that should mellow right away with time....and it doesnt detract right now.

Overall, man i really like this one. Im glad i have 5 more and depending how it keeps drinking while aging the plan right now would be to age out 5 years....just because Bell's beers are known for great aging. Is this bourbon county barleywine? NOPE....but its great in its own right. Comparing to prior experience...id say its a slightly better Insanity.

Took a break to take a quick walk around the neighborhood before the rain starts back up, and now time for another new beer. This one happens to be number 750 for me!

This one is Clown Shoe's Crasher in the Rye. A unique stout with lots of oaky and tobacco aromas and flavors. A chewy mouthfeel and a dry rye whiskey finish. I'm glad I tried it, and drank it relatively fresh, but not sure I want another bottle.

Happy new beer sunday. Weather here in the mile high city was nice and sunny but as the afternoon rolls in so do the thunderstorms. new variety of a great beer today for me. Crooked stave hop savant Amarillo edition beautiful looking beer but the taste is a little too funky for the amount of hops they put in. The Brett is very noticeable but it is not very sour confusion yes. Overall a good beer but crooked stave has better.

Back with that local IIPA I mentioned in my previous post – Clocktower, from River City, named for the iconic structure that sits in Spokane’s Riverfront Park, just about the only holdover from before the ’74 Expo, when most of the industrial buildings there were razed:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34277/172654/?ba=woemad
It’s okay. Very much a malty take on the style. I’ll certainly drink it again, but it won’t replace Iron Goat’s Impaler as my favorite local IIPA.

Speaking of Iron Goat, in my last post I forgot to mention a new beer I had on Wednesday that was outstanding. Each Wednesday, as part of what they call their "Year of the Goat" series, Iron Goat unveils an extremely small batch “experimental” beer, then invites drinkers to write down what they think of it, in order to have feedback they can go back and review with an eye towards repeating such beers that were especially well-received. This last Wednesday it was a barleywine that was ridiculously drinkable for something that was 13% abv and with 85 IBUs. I really hope they do it again.

    Greetings NBSer's,

A very nice amber (really an IPA) with great weather to match all the fruitiness in the aroma.

Howzit goin fellow beer explorers?! Today is a lazy sunday in OC that will consist of watching basketball and golf and trying a new beer (well, sort of a beer...)
I was surprised to see this one in my local bevmo as I thought it wasn't distributed in CA, but I guess I was wrong! I really wanted to just buy a single but the only option was a six pack so I bit the bullet and grabbed a sixer. Kind of regret it unfortunately. Anyway, onto my thoughts of the "beer":

This pours a dark black with a very small head that disappears within a few seconds. It looks just like a root beer. The smell is heavy on vanilla and cream and maybe some cinnamon spice. Once again, smells just like a quality root beer. The taste is, you guessed it, the exact same as a friggin root beer! Vanilla, cream, some oaky flavor, brown sugar and I cannot taste any alcohol whatsoever. Overall this thing really just is a great root beer with a surprising 5.9% alcohol. It is super sweet and has no beer like qualities to my palate. I'm really having trouble rating this one because I just don't see it as a beer. I understand that probably was what the brewery wanted so it's a tough one to review. It's like I'm using a beer rating system to rate a soda, if that makes any sense. I would definitely love to try the 10% alcohol one to compare differences.

Good afternoon, NBSers, and thanks to our gracious host-o'-the-day @Greywulfken for getting us kicked off!

I'm posting my first new brew of the day rather late by my standards, but it's rather appropriate for the heat: Sixpoint Jammer Gose.

Pretty enough brew; the aroma really draws me in, though. A touch of sour, and waves and waves of floral notes. There's a very pilsner-like sickly sweetness to the malt profile.

Flavor is a bit of a let-down. There's some salt up front, which returns rather strongly on the back-end; sweet floral and malt notes carry the middle third. A tiny bit of tartness - I can't really call it "sour" - lingers throughout. All the flavors are rather subdued and blended together.

Easily the best part of the brew is the incredible crushability: it's light, easy, active, cloying on the back-end, and the salt helps open up your palate. Not a great brew, but a great choice for Summer.

A shockingly high +rDev, especially for me; I guess most people really aren't keen on this brew. I think the lack of any real sourness is a factor for some. For me, the numbers are inflated because I really, really like the nose on this brew; it smells like Spring in a glass.

    Cheers, NBSers!

I am drinking a beer now that has been in my fridge for some time. It is a dark beer that blows a bountiful and promising head. This is a beautiful beer. Deep and dark, acidic, light for the big roast and color. Very tasty and a great drinking dark beer that has touches of sour well hidden.

So here is the beer I picked up at New Glarus yesterday, the R&D Wild Bitter.

The aroma is hop notes of citrus, musty grapefruit, and some earthy hints mixed in the scent. I pick up some dry funk from the Brett and lemon notes.

The flavorful citrus hops hit right away, grapefruit and some lemon along with earthy notes. The Brett fills in to give it just a bit of a musty funky flavor and it finishes with a sharpness similar to mineral water.

I really enjoyed this interesting, hoppy funk beer that reminds me of O'so Winds of Change. No idea how this will develop over time, but I think it would be best drank in 3-6 months before the flavors of he hops diminish.

Hey all NBSers! What up hope you're having a great Sunday. I'm done with work and ready to throw my hat in the ring, although probably not as deserved as many of you.
Thanks @Greywulfken to getting us off to a great start. (That wolf looks a lot like you lol) and a very interesting piece of reading. Because I suffer from ADD it took me awhile to get through it but well worth the effort.
Pleasure meeting many of you yesterday. It surely was a fun day.......To Beer.
I said I'd given up on Shipyard. But since I like the style I'm gonna give it a go.
    Shipyard Imperial Pilsner.
Golden color with a nice sheen. Continuous column of bubbles rises to the bottom of a lager like head. Thick 1/2 cap hangs with rings of lacing after each sip.
    Citrus, pepper,doughy, leafy greeness.
As the bottle says: sweet up front. Was expecting this in an imperial pils, maybe a tad too much though.
Tangerine, spicy, yeast, black pepper, enjoyable bitterness.I swear this is similar to drinking a black pepper wine biscuit if that makes any sense.......
Coats the tongue but tiny bubbles and dryness wash this away. Refreshing in a sense. Stops short of cloying sweetness. As the beer warmed this all balanced out quite well.
Oh Shipyaaaaad. I like imperial pils and this is not a bad rep. I gave Shipyard another shot and not too shabby for the $. Not the best but well made. I wonder if they had used Hallertau rather than Saphir would it have pushed it to the next level?
Bleeding hearts in the pic. They love the shade............
Hey have a great week and as always thanks for listening![IMG]

Hello again! I'm back with my second (and final) beer for the day. The thunderstorms went around my area and it is sunny and in the 70's. Beautiful day!

I'm on the phone with Wasatch - and we had a beer "together" ... Toppling Goliath Smoove Opferator. It certainly is smooth. It has a nice dark character for a brown ale. I scored it a 4.31...

I have 0 Italian heritage, but love dem Italian meats and treats

Confirming that it is indeed, hot as fuck outside, reached for another of my new brews from Ninkasi...
Maiden the Shade, made with 7 (unspecified) hop varieties...

Noted some floaties in the bottom of the bomber, so I decanted carefully...
And then knocked back a shot glass of the floaties, which seemed to disappear upon pouring anyway...

    *Ninkasi magic*

Lotsa of lemon, grapefruit, and orange impressions...
Bitterness is subtle and slow, and moderate...
Very summery indeed - citric and bright, lean and tight...

Pour number two and then my review...
For my tastes, I'm normally more partial to an IPA like their Total Domination, which has some dank and piney elements, but this was a nice-drinking ale with a lot to offer.

Watching summa dat Duck-Hawk action, just now starting the 3rd period with the Ducks up 2-1...

Hope yer day's going well and yer beers are really swell...
