He's right. Plastic does leech flavors...specifically hop flavors. The thing is, there's plastic on a crown liner too that is also leeching away flavors all the time. We switched to a denser plastic a few years back (when we switched from twist to pry) and started doing more work on the flavor scalping perspective. Bottles scalp a LOT of hop flavor too. What I disagree with is the sentiment that you can't put the same beer in a bottle and a can and keep the flavors the same. None of our data shows that to be accurate in our case.

Cans vs the plastic 2 litre bottles is hotly contested on Diet Pepsi Advocate

Just curious, is there a particular reason for this?

” I don't know how people can stand the taste of canned beer after having the glass aged version. Cans can simply not add the character that proper glass aging imparts on a beer.

I have a particular fondness for the Italian glass commonly used by Polish breweries to impart a certain earthy crystalline quality to their porters. It really complements the dark fruit character.

After learning to truly understand and appreciate glass aging, cans seem about as tacky as boxed wine.”

False. Was false the last time I saw you post it and is even more false now. I'm sorry I don't intend to sound rude; and if you can offer some actual scientific data to back up your claims, I will consider them.
And the boxed wine comment is false too, considering the advancements in packaging.

Apology accepted. You stated earlier in the thread that plastic does not leech flavors, yet this seemed to be immediately contradicted by Mr. Nevadabill's information. Admittedly, he does state that crown caps are worse offenders, and I would imagine, by extension, that a giant plastic bag like those used in boxed wine would leech flavors as well.

None of my statements in this thread, which are backed up by two-centuries of progress in beverage glassmanship, have been dis-proven by anything factual. I'll rely on the experience of those who've paid their dues blowing the tube rather than those who clearly have not reached a scientific consensus.

Back in the day (circa 1980) there were several counties and jurisdictions that had an ABV cap for draught beer at 5%. We started making the Draught-style Pale Ale and just never changed it.
Many people here at the brewery who are obviously experienced Pale Ale drinkers love the two versions...Draught style as a session beer, bottle style as a daily drinker. Oddly, here at the brewery's taproom we do draught-style in a keg, and also bottle-style in a keg (only place on earth where it's available) which is a weird comparison.
In fairness, it is still one of the most popular draughts in the market so we're probably just going to leave it alone at this point.

Obviously that'll impart some taste but so will drinking one straight from the bottle. Poured into a glass is the only real fair way to judge the two.

While I am a strong proponent of drinking beer from a glass there are indeed times when it is practical to drink from a can: canoeing, golfing, and other outdoor activities.

    Cheers!

That's great to know. I do remember Michael Jackson making the distinction between the bottle and draught versions way back when, but don't think he ever explained why it was so. Thanks for the explanation.

Thats what red solo cups are for.

They are a crappy option, but still better than drinking from the bottle or can.

“That’s what red solo cups are for.” I recognize what you are saying there but it sure is tough not spilling a solo cup when you are paddling. I have much better luck keeping the can upright.

    Cheers!

Does it taste different in an aluminum canoe vs. fiberglass?

Depends on the terroir of the fiberglass and if the crystalline structure complements the specific beer style.

On my podcast, we recently did an (completely unscientific) "A-B" blind cans vs bottles show. The five of us were able to tell which was the can more times than not, but mostly preferred the beers that came from cans. We plan on coming back to it in a few months and replicating the test with a blind triangle test to see if our original findings were accurate. The show link is in my profile, in case you're interested.

I emailed BBC yesterday asking if they could elaborate on Koch's statement and provide any data on it, and this is what I got.

Doesn't really answer any of my questions about the claim of needing two different beers for different packaging types, but there you have it.
