I looked and didn't find an answer. But I'm pretty darn sure that the most rated is also the most liked beer.

I think the beers listed as examples in the beer styles' lists are done so by number of reviews. Guessing you could check each of those pages, saving time by focusing on the big 3-5 styles (IPA, APA, stout, etc) and skipping things like Braggot and Sahti .

It sure would be nice to have some additional site functionality that would allow users to efficiently search for the answers to such questions.

Pretty strange that FBS is the most rated. No doubt that many thousands more people in the world have tried Boston Lager than FBS, but apparently those people aren't on this site.

I'm just surprised 6,000 more people on this site have tried FBS than Boston Lager. I mean, you're a member of BeerAdvocate who rates beers, and you haven't had Boston Lager (or SNPA, Fat Tire, Bud Light)? That's weird.

Yep. Interestingly the DFH 90 used to be and is now "de-throned."

I've brought this subject up quite a few times in the past. The answer is that MOST BAs only rate beers they like. I don't see any problem with that (I'm one) What it does lead to is confusion about style bias. People think that a high score is comparable across styles. It's not. What is comparable across styles is the amount of ratings within that style. So there you have it. to find out if a certain beer is one of the best in it's style you need look no further that the amount of ratings it has within it's style guidelines. It's a very safe bet that if you want to know what a very good (put style beer here) is then look at the style and pick the most rated. Is it the best? Well inside that number are people that say it is.

I think people have drank those, just not reviewed.

If you go to the Beers of Fame it shows the total # of ratings in the right column. It's not sortable, but most if not all of the most rated/reviewed beers appear on this list.

I don't do my ratings here, but I do find that I've tried tons of beers that I haven't rated on the site I do use. The issue I've ran into is that I started rating about a year and a half ago. I don't like to rate beers that I haven't had recently, so most will go unrated since I'll probably never go out and buy any of the big beer domestics from my younger days, most Sam Adams, tons of retired Southern Tier beers, or ones I had years ago that are still made, but I wouldn't buy today. There's probably hundreds I'm missing, which sucks, but I'd have to buy and drink them all over again and I don't see myself going into a store and buying every domestic/craft I had from my younger days just to rate them.

I guess I just assumed people who rate beers on this site would rate all beers they've tried. But that wrong assumption would explain the numbers we're seeing. Good points.

I agree, but the fact is the last time I had a Boston Lager, BeerAdvocate didn't exist. I even went to a local bottle shop a couple years ago specifically looking for a Sam Adams single just so I could review it, and was told by the owner that they don't carry that beer because nobody buys it. This is one of the best bottle shops in Seattle. And I'd be surprised if many other beer specialty stores around town gave up shelf space for it; I can't recall seeing it.

No comment on your suggestion that we take one for the team by drinking a Bud Light. <shudder>

EDIT: To your response directly above mine, I do review just about every new beer I try, and have been doing so for about 4 years now.

I haven't rated those beers because they are pretty much a given. Who hasn't had Boston Lager or Fat Tire? A rating is almost silly because you know what you are getting with those. They are good beers, but nothing to write home about. To me ratings are for beers that I've had that most people haven't had. It's a way for me and others to look at how a beer is rated and hopefully make a more informed purchase.

OK raters do we really need 14k ratings of DFH??? [and I started a do you rate thread!] Let's rate some beers a little more off the beaten path and maybe more regional beers for the travlin' folks.

What about people who don't have access to those beers or the familiarity of common American craft beers? I.E. someone overseas or someone new to the beer craft. It can't hurt to rate the "popular" craft beers or beers in general -- if rating is your thing.
