I haven't brewed in years, but I have a buddy that just started, so I'm trying to help him out a bit...what are some of your favorite citrusy hops for an AIPA, when I brewed, we were pretty much limited to Cascade, Columbus, and Centennial

    Thanks

My preferred hop for "citrusy" is Centennial.

    Cheers!

I like that one too, but only if I want dill with the lemon.

If you get lemon pledge from Sorachi you're doing it wrong or perhaps you spend too much time polishing your wood.

I'm looking forward to trying Stone Pale Ale 2 before I commit to 5 gallons of Mandarina beer.

Jeff, I am also a fan of the Mandarina hop. I sure wish that Victory would do a re-brew of the Mandrina Pale Ale they made a couple of years ago; I consider that beer to be a German Pale Ale and I thought it was a very tasty beer!!

Below is a description of CBC Mandarina Pale Ale from the Victory website:

    “CBC Mandarina Pale Ale

    Pale Ale

A blend of German pils and caramel malts combine with German Mandarina and dry-hopped Mandarina to create a full bodied, citrus-hopped brew with a pleasant bitter finish and lots of hop flavor.

    Composition

    ABV: 6.0%

    Availability

    Special one-time release, March 2013”

    Cheers!

I tried some single hops beers made with the 4 new German releases at the NHC last year really liked the Mandarina, made 10 gallons of a pale ale with it. I have 6 oz in the freezer to make another beer with it.

On that Hop Wheel, is herbal the same thing as piney/resinous, or is that evergreen?

I'm surprised no one posted "citra".

It is citrusy with passion/grapefruit/lychee notes.

Mixing Amarillo/citra/centennial will get you a nicely balanced and well rounded citrus flavor and aroma.

It is really hard to beat Centennial for a general citrus flavor.

Sorachi Ace is disgusting, it sucks as a bittering hops and it sucks as a finishing hop. I have no idea how anyone successfully uses that shit. Did I mention it is disgusting

I was thinking the same thing, as I didn't even see it on the chart that Jack Horzempa posted earlier this week..

That chart is from Brewing Classic Styles by Jamil Z and John Palmer, published in 2007. Citra was released in 2007, and really hit the scene in 2008. Notice that there are not any of the newer hops like Mosaic, Equinox, any NZ or the 4 new German ones on there.
