I like to think if I ever somehow managed to get my hands on some crazy whale like SR-71 or KBBS I could hold on to them for a while and save them for some special occasion...but I know I am lying to myself lol. Every time I opened the fridge it would eat away at me inside until I just couldn't do it anymore and talked myself into believing the second tuesday of a month was a legitimate cause to open it. Now, I will probably never get my hands on beers like the ones mentioned or Zombie Dust, Heady, etc. because I not only don't have access to much in the way of whales around here but not in quantities where I know I would have some to drink and some to trade. No way I could resist drinking my whales much less only get them to flip for other beers lol. I do hope when I am in a better way financially I can dip my toe in the trading pool, but that is not this day.

I drank the hell out of my Vanilla Rye when I got it. But I did save it for a special occasion. I can't say that I've had any whales (at least nothing on the "official" list), but I've definitely had my fair share of hard to get brews and I always make sure that I drink them before I trade them away.

Yes, i always drink them. Never agreed with the mentality of buying and not enjoying it. Kind of like when i used to collect comic books and people would buy them and bag them without ever reading them.

    I understand, i just don't agree :grinning:

This is a good policy to live by. I drink all of my rares/whales though sometimes I might age for a year or more first if the style would benefit. If I get more than one sometimes I'll drink the extras, sometimes I'll trade.

I was tempted to break this policy when a buddy randomly sent me a Vanilla Rye (we take turns sending boxes of stuff we know the other would want) and I saw all the crazy shit people were offering for them. For me a Lou Pepe Framboise would be a more enjoyable beer that I could get for it. But then I thought - no - I better drink this myself. Looking forward to opening it.

Absolutely. The few I've encountered I definitely did. Why wouldn't you? I'm not saying you should drink 'em yourself, but you should definitely consume them. That's why they were brewed in the first place. Plus, in most instances they aren't going to get any better.

I would drink one there at the bar, and if it was worthy, I'd buy another one to share with my beer homie(s).

Yes, but oftentimes people do long after whales have peaked.
