Maybe this is a silly question, then again maybe it isn't. Although lately I've been pondering this, because it seems pretty legit.

Veteran BA's on this forum, are there any homebrews you have had or had heard about that you feel have garnered hype on the forums over the years/batches? More to the point, are there any brews that trade regularly or sporadically for better than off-the-shelf, if at all?

I know I've certainly had brews from fellow BA members that are in the 90th+ percentile. I don't know of any that are hyped or well trading homebrews though.

Wakefield is righting a lot of hype right now, at least on the other site. Locally I can think of a few... I had Ken Schmidt's Oaked Sour Aloha Plenty at Stone Sourfest... everything I've had from his hand has been divine.

Just remembered a 3rd reason I came here--
    To hype Weatherdog's Berliner Weisse!
That shit hits the spot better than Chris Brown!

I heard Depomation was dissapointing but if it's hype you want then that's where it's at.

From the guys who's user names I know:

    1) NHLakesBrewer. His lineup is better than 75% of breweries I've been to. I wouldn't think they'd be 'hyped' because they're not that rare. http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/how-often-do-you-brew.25084/#post-306470. That's 60 batches of 10 gallons ~ 4000 imperial pints, 4800 US Pints if my math is right, which it likely is not.

    2) Stakem. Not sure if he brews solo or w/ other folks but the bottles they opened at the last Southampton release were very very good. As in, compared favorably next to the commercial stuff we were opening.

Wakefield is the real deal. His stuff is fantastic. Rumor is he won't be classified as a homebrewer for much longer, though.

Yeah, he's been in planning for some time now. I can't wait to have a bajillion bottles of random Wakefield beers in my house. Won't hurt as trade bait either, once people far and wide taste it. I'm drooling....miami madness....drool

    I'm trading my M clone 1:1 for M currently.

Only mine is in a brandy barrel (Old Sugar) not bourbon

    Hype it up!

Please tell me this is a peak at the table of terror.

    ISO: Weatherdog's Berliner

CooperEllis mentioned Stakem. I have been very fortunate to receive some of his homebrew and have since told him I wouldn't mind if he ever sends me another commercial brew. He makes some amazing beer.

I'm getting all sorts of love on here. I can't take all the credit for the berliners, my wife (menschenfresser) has been brewing better batches than me of that one. I do take so much pride that I had crafted the worst tasting thing anyone has ever put into their mouths. Ask anyone who has had it, there is no comparison. It's straight butyric acid and vinegar. It was about a 3/4 gallon spontaneous lambic test batch that could not have turned out worse. It's kind of a biological weapon now, and with less than 1/2 gallon left I have to be smart with the way I ration it out. The reason it's labeled Crianza Helena, well I hear Chadquest knows the answer to that one.

I've had some great stuff from Scray24 and I have to put the hometown favorite in here, Fearbeer's Liquid Pie. It's magical.

You should age some of it on various fruits for next year's tasting.

A very early peek, as the giant snifter of awful (it really wasn't that bad) looks to be empty at the time of the photo...
