Drinking full stack right now and I am blown away with how little hype this beer, or any of their IPAs get...am I on bath salts? I can't be the only one who thinks this brewery makes IPAs on par with other half...is it their presentation? Do they need to release cans to get recognition?

Agree with you that Singlecut does awesome stuff. It's also cool that you can find the bottles in different parts of the city. But that's also what hurts them as far as buzz: they're too easy to get. Other Half's limited releases, case or 4-pack limits and brewery only releases capture all the buzzwords that make beer-chasers shit their pants.

This isn't to discredit OH, as they make good shit. But Singlecut (among other NYC breweries) is also producing some major heat.

I've only had 3 of their beers but I enjoyed all 3. I actually had Mo Shuggie last night and thought it was pretty great.
My only complaint with them is probably the 500ml bottles at around $6-$7.
So yea if they canned or even did 12oz bottles I think they would definitely get a bit more love.

Edit: The rare factor definitely comes into play. No need to wait in lines for fresh Singlecut bottles

They have really stepped up their game. Original Full Stack was a good not great beer. It now ranks up there with all the amazing hop masterpieces for sure. Bon Bon is crazy delicious too. I am looking forward to getting to try all their beers.

How great is it to be a hop head who likes to drink local New York beers now? Fuck San Diego, screw Vermont, gimme New York.

Singlecut brews are great but I really think it has to do with their marketing and price point. On the day of the first release of Bon Bon bottles I went out to support and I was literally the only one at the brewery for a good 45 minutes and there was absolutely nothing going on for the bottle release. I was pretty surprised. Also the price point at 5.99/6.99 for 16.9oz is in the Maine Beer Co territory and I don't like spending $7 on a pint to drink at home. The cost of brewing beer in Astoria has been brought up by others but i don't think their batch sizes are that small that would constitute that price. I'd love to see 16oz cans coming out of Singlecut. I think the latest Mo Shuggie I had was on on point with Other Half Nelson.

    re: hype difference vs OH
location, location, location. Brooklyn hype is different than any other - if SingleCut or Barrier were in Brooklyn - you'd be hearing about them (especially Barrier) much more often. I would say the ideal demographic of the beer nerd/enthusiast who will wait in line for beer - lives in Brooklyn.

They used to make mostly lagers and an IPA or two now they seem to have swung the other way. I think OH gets so much hype b/c it makes almost exclusively IPAs and there are many especially on this site that mainly drink IPAs. Other styles don't generate excitement among that crowd unfortunately. I personally think any brewery need to make great IPAs to survive and the real interesting breweries make great beer in other styles too. Barrier does that. I wish SingleCut made a wider variety these days.

I think their prices are too high, growler prices are high too.

Single cut should get a little more hype. Their 2 DIPA's Bon Bon 2x and Billy 200 are both better than OH's Green Diamonds and G is for Green IMO.

It definitely is an exciting time for sure...a lot of good beer that seems to be getting better...I can only imagine what it will be like 2 or 3 years down the road in ny!

I had full stack when it first came out, liked it, didn't love it. May have to try it again. Had Bon Bon in a bar a couple of months ago, it was too warm, would like to revisit this one under right conditions. Also had "Does anyone remember laughter" at an event this month, solid.

I wish Singlecut would get some hype so the lines at OH were shorter  !

Dave you are a due for a trip south to OH soon.

Sacrilege !! Ha, ha. Will have to give these ones a try.

Maybe we need to gather our OH crew and hit Singlecut one day instead of OH.

And speaking of great local IPAs - Barrier's new Suburbs and Atypical are amazing but don't get talked about here. I highly recommend them - I prefer them over Money.

Interesting too that most of the conversation here centers on IPAs. I thought Singlecut's Eric More Cowbell Nitro was great and the Rum Barrel-Aged version was superb. Their pils, for all the lack of fanfare that the style and most lagers garner, also is delicious.

Finally, my first introduction to Singlecut was their Hibiscus Kim Sour lager and that beer was the jam. Long story short, I think Singlecut does a lot of styles well, not just IPAs. Not sold on Other Half in the same way (yet).

***Aside: What exactly is a sour lager by the way? I find what Singlecut does to taste like a berliner weisse but that's an ale. Anyone know anything about this?

I prefer their other beers over their ipas - especially the black lagers John Michael, George the Belgian ale and the 19-33 lager.

BTW they are having BBQ party today at 12pm.

Was in NY on Friday and couldn't think of the name of this brewery which I had tasted months prior. I particularly liked their Neil into the Void

Had fresh Mo Shuggie at Blind Tiger on Friday night, and, wow. Dank, dank, dank. Even my non-BA friends that got one were very impressed.

And here I thought I was the only one. That's a tasty beer. I'm not too sold on many of their other offerings (besides Keith), but I never rule them out.
( you're always in the wrong region forum... )

@Ilovelampandbeer , I think you'll find a spike of (very positive) interest lately for this brewery because of their bottles reaching beyond NYC. People were excited about them when they first opened, and that either plateaued or died in the finicky beer buzz world. Some excitement is back. As is proven by people lining up for Other Half cans when the same beer can be found on tap all over NYC, draught will only get you so far (and mobile canning is treated like the epitome of cool).

I am assuming trading is also driving a lot of the demand for OH cans. This area has never had a brewery like this that has beer that is obtainable in quantities and has a lot of trading value.

Yeah. It's due in part to the BeerAdvocate ecosystem. BeerAdvocate festival exposure, magazine exposure, and 60+ page active forum thread... results in BeerAdvocate trading demand. The beer, of course, has to be darn good too (but I roll my eyes when folks claim that unlike Budweiser drinkers, they aren't susceptible to marketing and promotion).
