What easily obtainable beers in your area you think are better than the Whalez you've had?

Mikkeller's Spontan series is my favorite. I don't need to look for any Cantillon Fruit Lambics for a while.

I don't know what "Whalez" they are better than, but a lot of "Beers of Fame" stuff is world class.

-Most Trappist beers (especially Rochefort, Westmalle, Orval)
    -Duvel
    -Saison Dupont
    -Rodenbach Vintage
    -Schlenkerla Fastenbier or Marzen
    -Ayinger Celebrator
    -Weihenstepaner Hefeweissbier
    -Victory Storm King

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. Pretty close to a perfect beer, especially for the style.

Probably from the person who came up with 'shelf turds,' and they both need to be discarded.

The obvious one for me, as others have mentioned, is St. B Abt 12. I've done numerous blind tastings with this, Westy, and others and this always comes out on top.

The rest of these examples are, for the most part PNW specific, but I'm sure most regions have their analogues.

I can always get HotD Adam, which might just be my favourite non-barrel aged beer.

Barley Brown's is draft only, but pretty much always available. Chaos is easily the best CDA around, while Forklift and Pallet Jack blow any rare IIPA/IPA respectively out of the water.

Bu Weisse kicks the crap out of any American brewed sour/wild beer and a lot of the old world ones as well. It's on every grocery store shelf around here for about $5-6. Petite Desay is up there, too.

Victory at Sea might be my favourite flavoured impy stout/porter. Again, I can get this at the grocery store.

Backwoods Bastard is probably a top 3 beer for me. It's been a while since I've lived in Founder's distro footprint, but it used to be easy to find for a good few months out of the year.

If we open it up to "on par with" or "nearly as good as", the list gets huge. Stone IRS, Narwhal, Urban Farmhouse (The Commons), Sculpin, Old Stock, ...

I finally got a 6pack of fresh ZD this week. VERY good beer, but I didn't think it was significantly better than Two-Hearted; which is everywhere (Jewel stocks fresh Two-Hearted).

I noticed the same thing. When I was finally able to track it down at the bar I wasn't wowed by ZD. It's an excellent beer but there are others that are just as good and a whole lot easier to get.
