I just wanted to take a quick census on pilsners. Pilsner Urquell is still one of my favorite beers, but sometimes I feel like I'm alone in my love for this style. I know that there are breweries making fantastic pilsners right now (Pivo, Little Yella Pils, etc), but all too often, my fellow craft beer-drinking compatriots look down their noses at it. I just think it's a criminally underrepresented style. What do you guys (and gals) think?

It seems that the majority of BAs prefer ‘bigger’ beers like IPA/DIPA, Imperial Stouts, Barrel Aged big beers, etc.

I am a BIG fan of Pilsners and some of my favorites are listed below.

There was a recent thread on Lagers which had some good discussion: http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...where-is-it-and-what-may-i-be-missing.294451/

    Favorite Pilsners

Sly Fox: Tettnang Keller Pils, Standard Pils, Charles Bridge Pilsner, 2nd Street Pils, Pikeland Pils

Victory: Hip Czech, Braumeister Pils – Sladek, Braumeister Pils – Hallertauer Mittelfruh, Braumeister Pils – Saaz, Braumeister Pils – Tettnang, Braumeister Pils – Spalt, Prima PIls

    Triumph: German Pilsner, Czech Pilsner

    Neshaminy Creek: Trauger Pils

    Troegs: Sunshine Pils

    Sixpoint: Crisp

    Trumer: Trumer Pils

    Sierra Nevada: Nooner Pils

Hardywood Park Craft Brewing: Hardywood Pils

    Firestone Walker: Pivo Pils

    Stoudts Pils

I think Pilsners have their time and place. But long story short they are just way boring compared to the options that we have now. If I want light and easy drinking.. Id grab a Gose, or a wit..Theres just too much other stuff out there.

yes under represented style but not under appreciated. You are not alone in the dream to see more quality craft lagers in general, not just Pils. And like @JackHorzempa listed there are some great ones already available.

I have to agree with Srkolodn. If given the choice, I'll go with something else. I wouldn't say that I look down on Pilsners - they're just not my first choice. And lately, there's a lot more choices out there.

A great pilsner is a world beating thing of beauty. And it is a damned difficult thing to brew well as flaws have nowhere to hide and can't be masked.

I just heard tell of a Jever tap handle near me, which is getting a pilgrimage at my earliest opportunity.

As far as popularity goes, I believe backlash against and disdain for AALs has also struck the pilsner and other pale lagers, whether consciously or as unintentional collateral damage. Throw in that they're both harder to brew and take longer to brew than an ale...

I'm also a huge fan. Absolutely love the stuff with Urquell right there on top. It's my go-to "light" beer, or basically a great beer when looking to drink like you may have previously done with an AAL. Sporting events, kicking back outside, golfing, etc..,..

You are not alone but i find it an unforgiving style if not fresh or if the brewer can't make a good one.

Me too. I love the pils! Tall, dapper and crisp. In fact I intend to lead the parade for the return of the Classic American Pilsner.

I love DIPAs and BA stouts as much as the next guy but I do love a good pils now and then

You are not alone in your appreciation for good pilsners. There are some not-so-good ones, and don't get me started on imperial pilsners.

Pilsner Urquell is probably my favorite beer at the moment; been getting it every time I see it available on draught, and it's getting harder to walk past it at the store. Love that bready malt backbone and equally delicate bitter hop punch.

See, this is where my problem lies. They have a reputation of being boring and all the same, but I just don't feel that that's true. There's just as much variation in complexity and quality as any other style.

Not at all. I've been to the far end of the beer spectrum and am now back toward the beginning, finding myself enjoying a well made pilsner or lager more and more each time I drink it. I still enjoy a crazy aged gueuze, beautifully hopped IPA, or barrel-aged stout with the best of them, but more of my beer allowance is going toward pilsners/lagers (and lower abv pale ales) than ever before. Just part of the tasting/discovering beer journey many of us go through.

Current favs? Sierra Nevada Nooner and Elliot Ness by Great Lakes. Nooner is a go-to in cans for me and EN will get me through until the fantastic Great Lakes Oktoberfest comes out (I know it's not a pilsner, but it is a wonderful lager).

You're definitely not alone. If I were only able to drink one style for the rest of my life I could easily choose pilsners.

I find myself drinking them more and more lately. They're great. My go-to pils lately has been Pivo, but I also love other American brewed versions, including Nooner, Prima, Hans, and others.

This reminds me that I would like to find a 12 pack of Summerfest for the upcoming hot weekend.

I feel better already. Too many times have I pressed Urquell on my friends, saying "Taste it! It's perfect!" only to have them give it a yawn. And don't get me wrong, I love all styles. I'm drinking a Dirtwolf as I type this, and I'm drooling at the thought of my new bottles of Stickee Monkee I got at the brewery this past weekend.
