If you want the best visit Tree House or Trillium. I've been to Tree House since they've moved to Monson, have had just about all of their beer and they've all been flawless. Nowadays it's a bit of a wait getting in and out for growlers but the entire staff is awesome and the beer is absolutely worth it. Trillium on the other hand has amazing hoppy beers with much less of a wait. Can't say all of their offerings have been flawless, but it is my go to when I'm in the Boston area and their staff is equally as awesome. You really can't go wrong with either. If lagers are your thing check out Jacks Abby.

    Cheers

Could you hit Tree House in the morning then Trillium in the afternoon?

As great as Tree House is, once you get your beer, there's nothing to do (they don't have a tasting room).

I haven't been to Trillium but have only heard great things.

Another vote for Tree House. I only get there about 2-3 times a year and every time I have to admit that the beer is very much worth the wait and effort.

My locals are excellent - Riverwalk, NBPT and Stoneface are all reachable during my lunch hour - but TH gets my vote.

If the plan is simply to stock up on good beer it's very close between Trillium and Tree House.

    Trillium pros:

    -Most likely bigger selection
    -MUCH quicker in and out
-Located in the city, so much more nearby
-Can probably take home more (looser limits)

    Tree House pros:

-Julius=arguably best hoppy beer between either
    -Probably will have Double Shot
    -Might have cans

The beer is more or less equally excellent between the two. If Julius is a 10, Trillium makes multiple 9.5+s.

If u r staying in or around Boston, go to Harpoon in the Seaport. The "Tour" is pretty contrived, but the tasting room is fun & the pretzels are fresh & tasty (if not authentic Bavarian). Plenty of good/interesting beer to be had as well.

Tough question. Trillium and Tree House are #1 and #2 in MA. But neither have a tap/tasting room. So I can't rank them high on places/breweries to visit. But would rank Trillium higher because its not in the middle of the woods. You can walk across the alley most times and get a Trillium beer at Row 34, plus you are in the city minutes from food and other bars. Also Harpoon beerhall is there as well about 1 mile away. No mind blowing beers but a fun beer hall with pretzels.

In the City I'd say Night Shift. Excellent beers and wide selection most days. Bottles and cans sales, brewery only stuff. Tasting room, with full pours and food trucks. With a parking lot to boot. Tough to beat for a city brewery.

Next for the burbs. I can't seak on western MA. Don't live or work there or frequent any places. Except for knowing how the drill goes at TH.

My top two are Jacks Abby and Wormtown. First JA, parking lot (small but a parking lot). Full pour taproom with many taps. Bottle sales and this includes brewery only stuff. No legit food close so that's a thumbs down. Wormtown parking lot and street parking, full pour tap room, and moderate sized tap list. Can and bottle sales are slow now, but hopefully they ramp it up. Then food is close. Plus Armsby Abby is a stones throw away and it's 40min west of JA! Two for one deal!

IMO Trillium and TH best in MA. If you are just picking bottles. WT and JA plus NS are tops for the full experience

If you want the best beer that Massachusetts has to offer, head to Tree House.

Sure there's a wait, but you can hang out and have some samples while talking to people waiting for your bottles. The staff is great & Dean is always entertaining. Monson is also pretty damn nice this time of year.

I'm a big Trillium fan but TH are producing beers unlike anything else I've had and I drink way too much.

Put me in the Trillium camp. While both are awesome, I can't get enough of anything Trillium makes.

hmm no tap room for either and one is in the burbs. and mostly growler and limited cans. I gotta evaluate cost and if this is worth 3 hours of driving

It seems to be a pretty distinct split. If you like the city and don't care about parking and need "culture" and "things to do," and "people," go to Trillium. If you're a woodsy, laid-back person who doesn't mind a lengthy drive, go to Tree House. Good beer and people at each.

If you actually want to spend time doing something other than waiting for beer (i.e., drinking it), I would suggest Jack's Abby or Night Shift. If you're going all the way to Nigh Shift, you might as well stop into Trillium and snag a few bottles.

Tree House is basically on the way from NY to Boston. Tree House at opening, Trillium for bottles, and hitting the Night Shift tap room would be worth the day trip for sure (and very? possible timing-wise on a Saturday).

Yes, and I believe JA to be the best brewery in Massachusetts if we're accounting for accessibility, which we should.

Tough to tell what OP is looking for. He plans on "taking a trip", yet apparently can "only visit one place", in his words--so it sounds to me like he wants to stay at this one place for all or most of the day. So he appears to be looking for "the best the state has to offer" in terms of brewery/taproom/hanging out experience. In that case, Tree House and Trillium are obviously out. Easy winner for me is Night Shift, which has a huge taproom, probably 10 interesting beers on tap to try--not to mention the all-important full pours of each--cornhole, brewery tour, likely a food truck (or you can order out), and cool events like board game nights, trivia night, weekly 5k runs--I think for that May the 4th Be With You they had a Shakespearean reading of Episode IV?

    Really, it's no contest.
