Am I the only one who thinks that Guinness tastes like malty water?
Sorry guys, it's gross. Give me a Gin and Tonic at a chain.

Its no worse than believing a beer is objectively better because it is rare. No worse than clear bias for and against certain brewers because they are otherwise famous, they're too big, too small or people just plain like/dislike them.

Proper presentation doesn't make it taste better. However, if presentation is completely unimportant, then explain why 20% of the ratings for each beer is contingent upon appearance. Ritual and presentation are a part of what bars do, and that does mark a place down in some people's books. If it doesn't matter to you, then that's fine for you.

I also think it looks a lot cooler to hand someone a glass right after filling so that they can see close up as the nitrogen all settles out of solution. If the marketing department at Guinness hadn't have driven this so hard into everyone, why would you choose it? The one thing that it has going for it is that it makes it easier for novice bartenders to pour a good head but isn't necessary. I can see why they came up with a method that made it easier for anyone to get the pour right. I guess I can't blame them for that, but I just find it funny that people insist that this is the "proper" way to pour the beer when it's just something they came up with and isn't objectively better at all.

There is no "GUINNESS" after "Diageo" ruined the brand!

Just so there is no confustion, appearance accounts for 6% when calculating the scoring at BA.

Firstly the so-called Guinness Pour is a myth and secondly there are so many great Irish stouts why people still drink Guinness is beyond me.

You guys can argue about whether it's a gimmick or whether or not there are better Irish dry stouts, 2 important things that haven't been touched on is the cleanliness of the lines at whatever pub (or Buffalo Wild Wings, I suppose) and the quality and proper hookup of a Guinness keg system. Call me naive, I think the pour is important, gimmick or not, there is an obvious difference in the overall quality of your Guinness from place-to-place, but the cleanliness of the lines and quality of keg hookup are parts 2 and 3 of the overall equation. Temperature and pressure with the system play a part too. The CO2 is just as important as the actual stout.

I am pretty sure what the legend is made of here is a courtesy. At a respectable establishment you do not get more than a certain amount of head on the beer for the reason that you paid for a pint. A good place will fill your glass and make it look attractive.

I think it's funny how Guinness' marketing has lead to people "hating" each other and wanting to yell at complete strangers:rolling_eyes:

    THANK YOU!

I was waiting for someone to chime in that there's no difference and it's all marketing. Unless someone wants to explain physically how the "proper pour" changes anything about the taste profile of the beer. You're really hitting on all cylinders with dispelling marketing gimmicks lately. The other recent one being the "drink from the can" gimmick.

Unless the "improper pour" caused a short pour, I don't know why the beer would be sent back.

It's a sports bar with underpaid bartenders trying to make a living. If you're going to hate them because they don't follow marketing gimmicks then you probably should just go to dedicated craft beer bars.

I don't go to BWW and I can't remember the last time I ordered a Guinness. An interesting hypothetical though.....

I'm always hesitant to say that I couldn't give a shit about the pour, b/c I don't feel like having this discussion with people.

I certainly don't mind Guinness, but is it really that good to begin with? And really that bad after not pouring it right?

To me its just another example of the psychology that goes into all of this.

I don't understand how we've reached a point in life where people can't either like or dislike something, because of the way YOU, personally, feel about it.

Just because you may like it, doesn't mean "Bob" sitting 2 stools away is going to like it.
Just because you may dislike it, abhor it, actually, doesn't mean "Julie" sitting at the booth on the other side of the pub dislikes it, rather, she loves it.

It's obviously part of my user name, but I've always enjoyed a good pint of Guinness. Since I was a teenager nearly 20 years ago. Since I've first had it, I've literally had thousands of people tell me they don't like it. Fine. I don't shove my opinion down people's throats, I don't need people to like what I like. I've also had thousands of other people tell me they DO like it, and, since I've been going to bars/pubs/restaurants for quite a while now, I've seen plenty of people I don't know drinking, so, unless they're forcing it down, I'd venture to guess they like it.

I'll end my little rant here....have a shit ton of other stouts and beers, in general, not only passed Guinness, but, lapped it many times over in the past 20 years? Of course. I do enjoy a nice Irish dry stout, still from time-to-time, but, the only time I really drink Guinness anymore is if I'm in a pub I feel I'll get a good pint in or, as evidenced by the other night, when I want to make a half-and-half.

You can shit on Guinness all you want, your opinion is your opinion, but for a brewery to be making a stout for more than 250 years and it's still one of the top selling beers in the entire World, that says a lot to me. I respect things like that. I also respect, bigger to myself personally, that a trusty pint or a trusty can of Guinness was ALWAYS there for me when my beer and stout options were to be counted on the amount of fingers I have, not in the hundreds (like it is now), and made me the conscientious alcoholic I am today...I am grateful for that.

TL/DR: Blind defense of Guinness

I agree that Guinness has marketed the proper pour. But the idea of the proper pour pre existed any advertising. Joyce even describes a pints of Guinness in detail and aside from the head being more yellow than it is now it is a close match to what is considered a proper pour.

I don't really care how the bartender pours my Guinness, I'm just going to drop a shot in it anyway.
