The beer that got me into beer: Cusquena Negra. Before having this in Peru, all I'd ever had was Bud Light/Coors Light/Keystone Light, etc. and I was convinced I just didn't like beer of any kind, not realizing there were different varieties of beer.

As far as I'm aware, it's not available in the States; I'd love to be proven wrong though, so shoot me a message if you know something I don't and/or have seen it somewhere!

Mickey Knox from Natural Born Killers. Hated the movie when I saw it in the theater. Came out on VHS and became the most watched movie for me in college. Haven't seen it in years, probably almost 15 yrs. Just something different that probably no one had as their avatar.

My wife and I at Founders Brewing this past summer - Gotta love Grand Rapids as a whole but that beer garden at Founders is second only to Stone Brewing in my semi-limited travels

Mine is part of a photograph of the Tommyknocker brewing sign from a brewery visit years ago. Loved the overall experience there. I try to go back every time I am in the area.

Mine's a figure pulled from a journal article (Nagel et al., The Plant Cell 2008), showing the gross to microscopic appearance of hop cones/glands. When I'm not drinking beer (and sometimes when), I'm doing scientific research; so, it seemed fitting.

My avatar is a fused combination of the ancient brewer's star - a symbolic representation of the craft of brewing going back to at least the medieval period - and the nautical star, also used for centuries by navigators to chart one's path. The avatar, coincidentally, is also the logo for Sixpoint Brewery.

I dropped out of school when I was 20 in order to dedicate my life to making great beer, and I have been on that path ever since. During these early and formative years, I learned the most important thing was to expose my palate to as many influences, flavors, and sensations as possible. This also necessitated a ton of traveling, and learning about the world's great traditions and heritage surrounding beer education, production, hospitality, and service.

During these early travels to the great breweries and places across our globe, I noticed a recurring symbol pop up at the breweries, bars, taphouses, inns, and on the point-of-sale items of dozens of breweries. This six-pointed star resembled the star of David, and naturally I was very curious of its origin and significance. While abroad, I asked many questions, but always seemed to get conflicting answers...it wasn't until I was stateside once again that I was able to do the research.

It turns out the ancient six-pointed "brewer's star" is indeed a symbol going back hundreds and hundreds of years...filled with history and heritage. In NYC in 2004, I thought it would be the perfect symbol to represent the ethos and principles of what we were trying to do - channel the great brewing traditions of yesteryear, but forge ahead with new formulations and styles in a hypermodern and dynamic urban environment. "Craft beer" was not new by any means - it was simply neglected, or cast aside.

As a brewer, at some point you come to the realization that you're not special, no matter how many high-fives you get. The best you can do in this short life is simply "carry the torch" - meaning we strive to represent our fellow brewers well - i.e. move the craft forward, and contribute something to this great ecosystem of beer. The brewer's star was once dead and dormant, and we wanted to bring it back alive, and let that star shine. That was 11 years ago, and the rest is history.
