Passing through soon I think? Any advice or tips. I presume I need to hit up a good shop in Flagstaff prior to settling in. Staying in Williams, I believe... If there is an old thread I gave up looking for it after a few minutes...
Grand Canyon Brewing has a taproom in Williams. Beer is ok. I like their porter. Most of the beer places in the GC lodges serve their beer as well
I'd suggest visiting a few breweries in Flagstaff. Mother Road is a cool spot and I like the beer. Lumberjack feels too much like a college bar but it's close by. There's also Historic and a few others. I've never visited Historic but I loved their Funkin' Gonuts toasted coconut dunkelweizen and they seem to make many a lot of other interesting beers. High on my list next time I'm passing through the 'Staff. Seems like you're passing through ABQ too. Plenty of good beer here man!
I will try to make a productive stop in ABQ as well. Certainly want to try some La Cumbre & more Marble as well!
For a store in Flagstaff McGaughs is it. If you want to combine beer and food then Lumberyard Brewing. If just beer then Lumberyard, Wanderlust, Mother Road or Hops on Birch.
Agree with the McGaughs recommendation. I'd also recommend a stop at The State Bar on Rte. 66. They have 20+ (I don't remember the exact number) taps of only AZ beers, and local stuff is usually well represented (unlike at Hops on Birch, which is one of my pet peeves about that place).
That Mobil off of Milton seemed alright if you want to find packaged beers you normally cant find in your home state. It's basically a gas station that has half of its store dedicated to craft beer. Quite a bit non refrigerated, but a solid selection given its smaller space. Price points are a bit higher here it seems.
I Hit a store in ABQ & purchased lots of great beer. Once in AZ I was kind of busy. Did find a nice place in Williams ( South Rim Beer & Wine Garage ). The Sonoran Pink Peppercorn Saison, was the best AZ beer I got to try, the White Chocolate was good as well... I liked the small slice of the beer scene I got, was busy being tourist mostly
I just went to Williams and Grand Canyon National Park this past weekend. Both are weak spots for craft beer. I tried GC Brewing Co IPA twice and disliked it both times. Other beers I saw on tap were SNPA and Fat Tire, GCBC Pilsner, New Belgium Skinny Dip and black lager. Best beer I had was a bottle of Roadside APA from Mother Road on the train ride from Williams to GCNP.
Had that same beer on that train. The Southrim Wine & Beer Garage in Williams had some nice beers on draft. Luckily I purchased beer in ABQ prior to getting to Williams. The selection I saw in Safeway was fairly sad.
If I hadn't bought a full package that included on-site food at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel, I would have totally gone into town and checked out the local color. But time was short. I think the best beer to be found on my round trip from LA to GCNP via Williams and back was probably at my local bottleshop.
Hops on Birch. But if you want local, take up the other recommendations. Tell us how all of the Grand Canyon beers are there in Williams.
