Opened these guys up tonight and tried them side-by-side
    Tasting notes:
The '87 was compared with a '12 so that most of the hop flavor and aroma wouldn't mask the nuances that build within this beer with aging. The '87 drank like a wine with little to no residual hops and a noticeable roasted malt and chocolate notes. Which one was better? Can't say because each was unique in its own way, though, I thoroughly enjoyed them! The 1987 was well cellared so it seemed to stand up to the test of time.

This is exactly why this beer has a great reputation as a cellar beer. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone not liking it aged for any amount of time. Was the 87 good enough to be worth chasing down an older vintage?

@Scott17taylor It was definitely worth hunting down and cost me roughly $30 in beer (The trade was expanded so I got some Michigan beers I can't get in Louisiana). Make sure, if you come across one, that it was cellared correctly as I believe this one was. I believe 27 years of non-optimal conditions could've easily ruined this beer as the bottle cap was more oxidized than the beer was!
@mattosgood According to Sierra Nevada, it was first released in the winter of '83.

If not held properly, these do oxidize badly. We did a vertical back to 1999 last year, everything past 2008 was a mess.

"First introduced in the winter of 1983..." according to Sierra Nevada.

An old pic of an early label (probably before the Feds settled on allowing the use of the term "barley wine/barleywine" on US beer labels):

Good stuff OP. Does anyone know if the Bigfoot recipe has changed over the years?

I know someone who had an '87 recently. He said it was absolute and utter garbage, so it seems that these may age differently, depending on storage conditions.

Also, if anybody has some other 90's or even 80's (well-cellared) vintages of this beer, shoot me a message!

This is awesome. I like your point about using a 12 so as minimize the hops masking the older vintage. I did a 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2015 tasting about a month ago and could not believe how well the hops held up. The bitterness fell off in the 2008. No longer the dominating quality, but still present.
