hello, before Beer Hunt crapped out I had over 400 different craft beers and have probably added a good 20 since joining BA. I also have had a ton of different German beers and have never heard of Helles. I see it's starting to get popular here in Jersey so I tried Leinenkugels' and it's garbage. I rated it 1.2. Is this a great style of beer or did Leinenkugels screw this up? If so, any Helles suggestions?

    Victory Helles Lager.

Also you can go to the Beer Styles and pick the Helles category. There's a link there that orders the list based on how high their rating score on here is. Start at the top and try what you can find.

It's probably worth noting that the Schlenkerla has a discernible smoked character, delicious as it is.

You can't go wrong with the big 'Munich' breweries either: Hacker Pschorr, Spaten, Hofbrau and Paulaner, but get the green bottles from a sealed case (Spaten and Hofbrau).

    Ayinger is also always reliable.

I'll second Victory Helles. Sly Fox is good too.

Good Helles lagers are amongst my favourite beers, but it seems like they're really hard to get right. The best I've had in the states are from Buoy (which is draft only in Oregon, and seasonal at that, so good luck finding it) and Andechs (much easier to come by; just make sure you seek out a fresh shipment).

One of my favorite styles of beer and glad to see it getting a bit of love lately, even the Rock Bottom in my area is brewing a pretty solid Helles now. When I need a break from hop bombs and/or just want a tasty refreshing beer, a Helles (or a Pilsner) always hits the spot!

For locals [to me] I like Victory, Sly Fox and Stoudts. For as much as I enjoy this style oddly enough I haven't explored it too much and stick to those three often, I definitely need to branch out a little more.

Weihenstephaner Original Premium is about as solid a Helles Lager as you'll find.

Personally, I haven't been a fan of any Leinenkugel beers I've tried. Schlenkerla Helles is one of my favorite beers on the planet. For a great local option, Sly Fox Helles is readily available in NJ. Southern Tier Where the Helles Summer is also great, but it's a seasonal.

I have a couple of Helles beers this year that were new to me that I thought were very good; from Southern Tier and Ninkasi.

    Cheers!
