I have been a craft beer advocate for about 7 years. I took the route that so many before me have taken. Intrigued by the bitterness of SNPA, drank a local IPA (lucky for me a legend in DFH 60), and was introduced to Stone IPA. Never looked back. I have lurked on BA for years. It is an incredible bank of knowledge and I owe so much gratitude for my experiences that have resulted from the “posts” that have been generated on this site. However, this is the beer that has interrupted the inertia of my lack of activity on this site.

Over the years I have converted so many of the friends and colleagues that were previously unaware of the breadth and depth of quality beer outside of that is advertised on network TV. My conversion success rate is incredible. My pitch is that there is an “authenticity” that results in a very high level of quality. I believe in this. However, with Grapefruit Sculpin, I feel that the taste is fabricated, in an InBev lemon-lime-strawberry-mango-peach Rita sort of way.

I am a huge fan of BP Sculpin. A subtle (in today’s terms) well made IPA. So what am I missing with GF Sculpin? What do I not “get”?

P.S. - glad to finally be a contributor.

IMO Greapfruit kills Reg Sculpin. I don't get the Sculpin love, IMO it's incredibly average, and pricy. I'd buy grapefruit, not regular.

Grapefruit Sculpin is the only Sculpin that matters.

I still don't understand the appeal for regular Sculpin. Confusing.

I can't answer your question but grapefruit Sculpin is/was on my 'next to try' list. I enjoyed regular sculpin and im assuming the grapefruit sculpin isn't sweet like a summer shandy. Ideally I'd add one to a make your own 6 pack but they are priced too high

I completely agree with you, OP. It tastes like sugared down juice, but is not even particularly reminiscent of what real grapefruit juice tastes like. It is not a bad beer by any means, and I am happy to enjoy it from time to time when I see it on tap, but it is very artificial to me as well. Grapefruit is supposed to be tart and bitter. GF Sculpin is an overly sweet juice-bomb. I think regular Sculpin is the far, far better beer.

I agree with OP as well. I find sculpin to be one of my go to iPA's.....that and two hearted are the only ones that I buy somewhat regularly. I tried grapefruit sculpin and didn't care for it at all. iMO they ruined a perfectly good beer. Sculpin has a nice balance of malt with a tropical citrusy hop flavor/aroma. Grapefruit sculpin overwhelms with a very unpleasant and unbalanced taste.

As much as it gets dogged on, I'm still a huge fan of the original. My experience with the grapefruit Sculpin is that A LOT of people who are still on the cusp of craft beer addiction, love it. I've also found that my friends who have more recently converted also love it, but I get the sense that they like the novelty of it more than they love it for what it is.
Until just recently, it was pretty tough to find regularly. I think that lead to some of the demand. The excessive fruitiness also makes for an easier transition for craft IPA newbies.

Lots of people seem to like it and others don't. Luckily for all involved, beer is not a platonic ideal and we can all drink what we like.

You don't not get nothing, so to speak. For some people, GF Sculpin is better. For others, like you or me, the "natural" grapefruit flavors which are added, smack of the artificial. They make a solid beer worse, even if it's still plenty good.

Wish I had input on this. Had regular and habanero but no grapefruit yet. Haven't seen it on tap to try and @ $16 for 6 its a gamble if ill like it or not...regular is damn good and the habanero was decent, not what I look for in a beer.

When I first tried it, I had it on tap and it was good and refreshing. Bought a 6-pack shortly after and it was ok. Like @smanrob stated, I think it's a smoother transition for people just getting into craft beer. Regular sculpin, IMO, already has a tropical and citrus flavor which made Sculpin one of my go to IPAs aside from Bell's Two Hearted. Kinda wish they left it alone.

I love FRESH regular Sculpin. Had one recently and it was phenomenal. Not sure what I can tell you about grapefruit Sculpin. I love it, smells and tastes very grapefruity. I don't think it tastes artificial, but hey, our palates taste what they taste. You don't like it, move on. That's the great thing about craft beer. So many options.

I would first say to try this beer fresh. Funny enough, the first time I smelled then tasted this beer, I was like: "WOW, this tastes like grapefruit!". Typically when beers boast certain flavors, I just don't get them. This was the first time I actually tasted what was boasted. Tastes are different and sometimes flavors can grow on people, just like you said with hoppy beers. However, like others said, don't drink it if you don't like it ... send it my way

I don't get the love for Sculpin, it was fine but nothing special. I found the grapefruit Sculpin to be poor.

    Habanero? That's where it's at!

Agreed. In fact, after I posted, I realized that it has less to do with me not liking it and more to do with me thinking it is a poor representation of the style. Probably a very good situational beer. i.e. a late transition after a session of IPAs or a good choice for an afternoon on the beach.

I enjoy Grapefruit Sculpin. IMO, it has improved a somewhat pedestrian IPA into something unique.

And yes, I think 5 years ago Sculpin was very much a standout, but now there are better options.

Your not missing anything. Way to much grapefruit. Not Balanced. Over Priced.

You're not missing anything. It's a generic BP thing. The same way Victory at Sea tastes more like Vanilla extract more than it does beer. And people love it!

Original Sculpin has enough tropical grapefruit dank notes on its own.

Grapefruit Sculpin is gimmicky...and tastes so. Keep in mind. The bulk of the demographic here has less than 8-10 years experience...
