I went to their soft opening today. The location they chose is sketchy as shit, but the beers are all solid. Always good to see a new brewery in our area.

Since I work nearby, I thought I'd walk over there today. Unfortunately, it was closed after their soft opening yesterday. This place is a block south of the southern edge of Little Tokyo and where you start to see some homeless encampments nearby. I'd suggest parking in the lot at the corner of Boyd/San Pedro or the one across the street in the medical building. I wouldn't venture south of that area. From the outside, the interior looked really nice and there is a restaurant two doors down.

    I'll try again next weekend.

Looking forward to checking out their beers. Agreed that they couldn't have picked a worse spot location wise. When the geographic area is literally referred to on Google Maps as Skid Row, you know you have a problem.

The Escondite is right next door. Now that there are two establishments on that block maybe it will help clean things up a bit. A friend of a friend used to refer to that stretch as Skidrokyo, hopefully eventually the skid aspect can get pushed a bit farther south. 3rd really is the dividing line currently.

Tap room is opening same day as LA beer week kickoff. Guess I will wait on this one for a bit.

Not much of an opening lineup of beers. Hope they're good...although if they suck you can just walk over to the Escondite for a pint.

Isn't that area the Arts District? That's the next area to be gentrified if I'm not mistaken

The Arts District doesn't go that far west. It is mostly bounded by Alamada.

Gentrification is heading east, not west. That's still the heart of skid row and considering it's getting squeezed on the other side due to the new spots on Main and Los Angeles st, that shit just means it's going to get more condensed in the heart of Skid row.

Yeah, that area isn't getting any better any time soon.

Skid Row is sad IMO, but not scary/sketchy. Starbucks 2 blocks away...Angel City Brewing, Pershing sq. nearby. It seems like ppl on skid row are more likely to ask for drugs/help than steal/break into a car in my experience.

I guess I also go to Cellarmaker alot in SF where sections of SoMA are very much like skid-row.

i agree that it's sad but disagree that it is not sketchy. don't get me wrong, i go to downtown all the time, including in and near skid row. but i'm always extra cautious in that area. especially if i'm with my girlfriend.

i think generally as a rule you're better off avoiding areas filled with people who are on, or coming down off of, crack / desperate / recently released from jail etc..

This exactly. I am friendly with the couple of homeless guys in my neighborhood. They are perfectly friendly, unless the one of them has too much to drink. 99% of the time I walk my dog I stop to talk to them. Sure they have a few problems mentally and with alcohol, but generally they are nice guys. The reap problem is when people become unpredictable. Someone on heavy drugs that alter perception become like this, also people coming back into society also have this issue. That said, it doesn't scare me at all. But I would never go anywhere with my wife that I felt she could get hurt in.

Beers were solid, but the location will keep me away. Not sure why they settled on that exact spot, but they will need to strongly consider an alternative location soon.

Skid row is no joke, about 10 years ago I used to wake up early on saturday mornings and volunteer and the midnight mission, did it for about 8 months until a cracked out guy attacked me in the mission. That kept me away for about 5 years, then, my wife and I decided we'd begin driving around skid row and hand out packed meals and blankets one fall, we did it for a few months never getting out of the car, but handing stuff out the window, all was great until someone was drugged out and tried punching out our window to get to my wife because she looked like someone he thought he knew. That was the end of my skid row adventures. We still hand out stuff to the homeless near our house in whittier, never had any problem of any sort, but I think the high population of homeless mixed with the huge drug problem packed into a few city blocks really pushes tensions up with the homeless, and makes them more violent in the particular area.
