Tonight I opened a caged and corked quad. Upon opening the beer foamed up and about 2/3 of the beer was wasted. The beer was pulled straight from the fridge with no shaking. This has never happened before. Was curious to what may have caused this. The beer was boulevard brewing sixth glass.

Ive had a couple Prairie Artisan Ales singles do this to me, as well as a corked Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad 2013 last week. Always disappointing.

Beers that are in a champagne bottle with a cork and cage are sometimes in that format for a reason other than they just look pretty. Some Belgian styles are noted for a higher level of carbonation, although I don't think that a Quad has that reputation. If this beer in question is bottle-conditioned, then it's just some sloppy work by the brewery in measuring the sugar level that is in the beer at the time of bottling.

This happened to me. I assumed it was because the cork was in so tight, that I shook the bottle a little too much when trying to open. When you see the foam you have to just start pounding it until it settles. Yeahbabyyeah!!!

Yea I started pounding it so I didn't have a mess all over the counter. But you can only pound foam so long.

It's called a gusher in my house. I've had it happen once or twice, but not 2/3 of the bottle gushing out. I've had gusher cans too.

Gushers are part of the craft beer experience. I open every corked beer over the sink just in case. It's kept me from mopping the floor a few times.

Yea it literally foamed over for a whole minute. When it was over I barely got a snifter of beer. And it was a 750 bottle

Experience counts here -- you could have been pouring that beer into your glass rather than watching Mt. Vesuvius.

    Not been my experience.

I got an over-carbonated batch of FFF Pride & Joy once that would foam if you looked at it wrong. Frustrating.
