So, I will be moving out to the Port Angeles region from where I am now (a few miles north of Seattle) in a few weeks. It is for work, and I don't have much of a say in the matter. One issue that I foresee is a lack of a nearby bottleshop. Yes, there are more important things in life, but its going to be an adjustment.

Can anyone recommend a good place to shop? Marina Market in Poulsbo may be my new go-to, and Central Market. Also, any homebrew shops in the area?

I think you'll have to take the ferry to Whidby and drive up to Oak Harbor for the Whidbey Beer Works!

There's a bar in PT, the Pour House, that has a decent bottle to-go selection. Further downtown PT there's a wine shop that carries some stuff. Other than that, I'm not real familiar with the northern end of the Oly Pen. Good luck.

That far up, you are in beer wilderness however there is some hope. I am thinking (and you as well?) that the lack of distro means there are a quite a few homebrewers. Seek out a small nano called Fathom and League in Sequim, I bet from there you can find some more nanos off the beaten path.

Also..............you are a short ferry ride from Victoria which has a very rich pub culture and emerging craft scene. And the exchange rate is pretty good right now too.

Last summer, Fathom and League was harder to find in Sequim than I thought it would be.

The "E" in Squim has bugged me since I first saw it. Nothing else to add really, just thought I'd share.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I know the region is a beer wasteland. Guess I'll need to stock up when I make it back to the east side of the Sound.

Some beer entrepreneurs really need to jump on the Olympic peninsula. For reals. There is so little on that side of the pond but so many tourists coming through.

It's kind of like the E at the end of Spokane. It serves no purpose except to baffle out-of-towners.

Both are good ways to tell locals from visitors, though. See also, Puyallup, Cowiche, etc.

I lived in Puyallup for a few years as a child, and still laugh whenever I hear someone say "Pooyaloop." It's one of the more extreme examples of non-local name mangling. I once heard in the 1980s an NFL play-by-play guy refer to the then- Cowboys QB as having grown up in "Yoh-kee-ma, Washington." And what PNW native hasn't cringed when someone from the east in a movie says "Oreh-gone?"

Well, actually it's Chris, but he's definitely holding his Rick.

edit: BTW, speaking of avatars (& thinking of a couple of your old ones), just got back from watching a couple of Collings Fdn. warbirds take off from where I work. Apparently they'd been out there since Monday, but I didn't find out until today. I showed up without $2,200 :grimacing:, so I couldn't go for a ride in the P-51.

I might have had a few brews by the time I posted that last night, and was trying to hard to make a joke.

I'm still unsure of how to pronounce Cowiche, as it wasn't a name I knew of until the beer came along.

I say co-eesh. I've been wrong often in my life though.

I pronounce it 'dee-lish'. And people look at me funny all the time.

    I've also heard:
    co-e-shay
    co-eachy
    cow-ashay

    The W seems optional.

I said "cow-eesh" in front of someone more knowledgeable, and he corrected me to say "co-ee-chee". After reading these responses, I'm both relieved that I wasn't the only one to not know, and less sure he was the expert I thought he was.
