Interesting article that does a good job of summarizing something that is indirectly referenced a lot, but rarely discussed comprehensively in San Diego beer circles. The only quote that really caught my eye was from Tom Nickel:
I think Tom has the best of intentions with that quote, but it takes a lot of effort from a brewery/brewpub owner to promote that sort of environment. There are a lot of breweries and craft beer bars whose patrons, on average, aren't any better behaved or more respectful of their surroundings than the people going to their neighborhood bar to drink Coors Light.

All the same, I hope Encinitas eventually allows a brewery brewpub to open, although I'm not sure they'll ever get a better option than they had with Bagby.

Yes. Yes you can. Just go to The Confessional next to Seaside Market. Yowza.

Yeah I think you're right about that. Even MT's Lomaland, which has always been a pretty low-key place, is starting to get a little bit rowdier, through no fault of MT's, I think it just comes with success. See also: Ballast Point - Little Italy.

this could have just been that particular day, but Belching Beaver was the most rowdy brewery i've ever been too. seemed like a college frat environment.

but again, it could have just been the day

I have noticed this usually when there are a couple beer buses going around on the weekend. I cannot remember the name of the company but it seems there is one that caters exclusively to the bro's. I see it mostly in Vista along that stretch of breweries.

Vista and Miramar seem particularly susceptible to the beer bus legions. I stopped by Alesmith last Saturday to pick up BA Wee Heavy and it made me really miss the policy they had for a while of not allowing tour buses. I know it was NHC weekend but the majority of the people in the tasting room were definitely not NHC attendees.

Are you talking about the North Park one or Vista? The North Park one is exactly like this. It can be fun sometimes, but it's quite unlike anything I've ever seen at a brewery or tasting room

Point taken. The reason I said that is because none of them were wearing badges or any sort of brewery paraphernalia, whereas there were quite a few people at both Toolbox and Council that same day who were clearly NHC attendees based on that same criteria. It wasn't a judgment based on level of intoxication or behavior, just secondary hints that it was the normal beer bus crowd rather than a special event crowd.

I cringe every time I go to a brewery and there is a tour bus parked outside.

I just close my eyes and remind myself that it will be 30-45min at most. Then go grab a beer and hide in a corner until it leaves. Then get another beer and return to my corner since I got comfy.

It's no different in Napa / Sonoma at the wineries. Tour bus = loud and obnoxious.
