I won't be in attendance, but I figured it's a question of time until someone asks about this year's Oktoberfest, and this piece of news popped up today

Wiesn-Maß erstmal in allen Zelten über 10 Euro

For all non-Germans, this means your liter of beer (usually less than that) will cost over 10 Euros. Not so bad for Americans due to the weaker Euro/stronger dollar, but this reminded me of my time living in Munich (1996-1998) when the Münchener Abendzeitung came out with news that the Maß would be over DM 10 for the first time. 20 years later, here we are!

10 Euros ($11.50 including tax) for a fresh 33 ounces of beer at a major beer event is still a pretty good deal no matter how you cut it, but the Germans always need SOMETHING to complain about, nicht wahr?

Yeah, I read about that the other day.... Glad for that good exchange rate! I believe I read that prices were from 10.15 to 10.40EU, depending on the tent, so you know people will just give 11.... Still not a bad deal for ~2 pints, plus all that Gemütlichkeit! Then again, at those prices, my days of having 5-6 litres are likely over. Do want to spend more time checking out the new bier bars, too, so some of my budget will go to that....

    Prosit!!

For german standards it IS very high. :slight_frown:
I would recommend going to Annafest Forcheim anyway. Last time I was there, it was around 7Euros for a Maß, which i already thought of as kinda steep:wink:

True, over 10EU for a Maß of just Märzen is steep.... Then again, 6.80EU for a Maß of Andechs Doppelbock frisch vom Faß at the source is friggin' sweet!!!

    Zum Wohl!!

Dinkel Acker in 1L servings? I think I'll pay the premium... :stuck_out_tongue:

There are a few others, but they're all Märzen beers -- and to be honest, the DA was damned good (Atmosphere? Maybe. So be it.). I take it you never went? Great fest -- reminiscent of the first Munich Fests I went to... when it was less over run by, well... Auslander .

I was just taking a cheap shot. I've never been, I have heard it's less touristy than Oktoberfest...well, I guess what isn't less touristy than Oktoberfest...I wasn't far away, either, I just never made it down.

Yeah, I know. I miss the old DA Pils too. :grinning:
Me an' Bierman -- we like the Oktoberfest. Guess we're just a little more tolerant than the rest of you... :stuck_out_tongue:
Too bad for you -- it really is a great fest for a big town.

Sounds like I'll be staying down south in Italy where a little local place sells 0.5l servings of Augustiner oktoberfestbier from wooden barrels for €3.50 and liters for €7.

I used to watch the Oktoberfest opening on Bayerischer Rundfunk...and then we'd head down to Schlenkerla (or up to Spezial) for 5 DM liters (O'fest were 10 DM back then...just couldn't justify the cost). That said, I did make it with some Munich locals a couple of times, and it's definitely worth going (at least once). Also, one of my business partners gets a table at the Schottenhamel every year, and has invited me to come this year, so I may have to go.

Hmm? This thread is becoming somewhat troublesome. Schottenhamel was my first stop tent at the Oktoberfest on my first visit and holds a strong draw to me. I have a very nice commemorative Maßkrug from one of the location's centennial celebrations.

Like a visit to Hofbrauhaus, hitting Oktoberfest at least once is also a "must". And, on a side, note, you don't have to spend the entire time in a beer tent.

I am glad I went to Oktoberfest years ago, and I had fun, but I have zero desire to do it again. No need to overpay and fight the madness. I nice weekend in Bamberg is a thousand times more enjoyable, and I am not even a big fan of Rauchbiers.

Love that elegant beer glass shape- no excuse to ever use a shaker pint again.
