I have been brand-hopping for quite a while now and I just cant find the beer that I really like (Apology for not listing what I have tried since I did not even care to remember the name of beer I didnt like, I can only recall Rolling rock, Heineken and Bud*). Pardon me for being pretty much a beer newbie. I am looking for a beer with strong malt taste and a hint of sweetness (not downright sweet, just a hint). Also, I am a cheapskate, the beer should not cost too much. Thanks in advance

You should try Bombardier from Wells and Young. It's very cheap here in Mexico I imagine it would be cheaper in the US.

Not sure what's available in your area, but it sounds like you should try some Amber or Brown Ales.

Agree with @JDW4195; I was going to suggest New Castle. BevMo! has a twelve pack for $13.99.

Well, most of my knowledge is East Coast, but... you should be able to get some Allagash White near you. Not cheap, but neither is it expensive.

Cheap won't get you far with this crowd, craft beer isn't really known for appealing to cheapskates.

Take a look thru this list of beer styles http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/ and see which ones might fit your demands. Create a list and head to your local beer store and scope out the pricing. Find a store that sells single bottles so that you can purchase a variety without committing to a 6-pack of each. It's going to be hard to keep your requirement of low cost because good-tasting beer does not come cheap.

To give you a specific style recommendation, I'll suggest that you look on the store shelves for a Maibock. They are seasonal, but should be fairly easy to found now, and some have a sweet malt characteristic. Rogue Dead Guy Ale is kind of a 'hybrid' example of this style.

If you're looking for malt-centric you have a few avenues to pursue; in my opinion, nobody does malty brews like the Germans/Bavarians, so I would suggest checking out some Doppelbocks:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/lists/style/35/
    • Ayinger Celebrator is (to me) the epitome of the style and has decent availability, though sometimes not the friendliest price tag.

Doppelbocks have a tendency to be higher ABV (5-6%+), so if that isn't your thing, you may also like English Brown ales:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/lists/style/74/
    • Sam Smith's Nut Brown is an excellent ale, very widely available, and generally well priced.
The links will list beers in order of highest rating, so my suggestion would be to check out these styles (and others that other posters will suggest) and see what brands are available near you, and go from there.

As a side note, you may also like Hefeweizens, they have a sweeter malt/wheat flavor profile and generally have a banana/clove overtone from the yeast. Weihenstephaner makes an excellent one, but for a readily-accessible domestic version I would recommend Kellerweiss from Sierra Nevada.

    Cheers!

Shiner Bock would also be a good choice, I think, for what op's asking for.

how about some Lagunitas beers? You are in Cali so easy to find, they are pretty cheap and most have a decent malt backbone and a nice sweetness to them...can't go wrong with a lil sumpin sumpin...

Try the lagers on the BA beer styles section ,referenced above. You'll find many beers you described. Your "cheapskate" may fade away after drinking "new " beers. Find a good bottle shop( a liquor store ) with a knowledgeable beer staff and a large selection. Find a brewery or bar with beer flights to sample. Stay here ,ask questions, drink and enjoy many beers..

In general it sounds like english and german styles are a good place for you to go.

Do not buy newcastle, It's just terrible at any price. It's what the bums in Britain drink.

Smithwick's is pretty malty...and doesn't cost too much. It might not be the best beer in the world, but could be one that you enjoy.

    Just my two cents...

I'm thinking some form of English ale would suit you...
