In the thread where a BA is going to let his beer get warm in the car, because he doesn't have a cooler, someone asks "what beer drinker doesn't own a cooler?" got me thinking. What are the basic needs for a beer drinker that takes beer seriously enough that they spend time on a site like BA?

A good fridge, glassware of choice, a good opener, a cooler, a few growlers, and what else?

"It's the beer necessities, those Mother Nature recipes."... or something like that

I'm not so sure a cooler is a necessity. I haven't had one in decades, and am getting along just fine. I do have a spare fridge and a beer fridge, so when entertaining I am not lacking for chilled beers to serve. Usually it's the same way at other peoples' houses.

As to outdoor activities, the few times it's come up that I needed one I was able to borrow it.

So, from me, it's one of those things that would be nice, I suppose, but it all depends on your lifestyle as to the real need.

ETA: in case anyone's wondering "why don't you just go get one in case the need arises?", well, I always tell myself that that's exactly when I'll pick one up. And it hasn't happened yet .

It's funny how 'make sure it's got a corkscrew' doesn't register with people when they talk about 'a good opener'...

A good opener is far from a necessity, many things will open a bottle of beer. But really, the only thing necessary is the beer, which of course takes money. That said, I have indoor glasses, outdoor glasses (not really glasses as they are plastic), multiple coolers, about 35 growlers, extra fridge, kegerator,...well, you get the idea...

Look for the beer necessities, the simple beer necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife...

An opener, a tulip glass, and a working olfactory sense.

... or just a good camera (sorry, I am an old person and I do not own a smart phone, and do not want to)

Otherwise, here is all I need:
    • refrigerator
    • bottle opener with corkscrew and cap remover
    • small knife to cut a wedge into wax-capped bottles to remove the cap
    • tulip glass

Sure, but why use a lighter, when the proper tool for the job is right at hand? One of beer buddies mostly refuses to use an opener, and tries to impress us with how many different things he can open a bottle with. While he's showing off, I've reached into my pocket, and opened the damn bottle already.

Ever since I stopped carrying a Swiss Army knife, and started carrying a Leatherman, I never have a corkscrew on me. Fortunately, it's rarely an issue.

Well, sometimes they just kinda follow you home. And then, they look at you with those big, sad eyes, and you just can't bear to turn them back out into the cold, hard world.

Or, maybe they live in one of those weird places where you have to use a specific growler for each place?

I was thinking 'A Beard', but I reckon that our resident, lovely lady BAs would take some exception to that.

This is true. I only have six right now, and that's five more than I thought I ever would have. Some places only fill their own, and sometimes you don't have one handy when you need one.

Like I said, not a need, just something that happens because most of these places refuse to fill other breweries growlers...believe me, I would be glad to have less...
